Allergy-Free Peanuts: Could They Be Real?

Amazing news for allergy sufferers, allergy-free peanuts might become a reality

Allergies are a huge issue for parents for so many reasons. When you’re first introducing new foods to your child’s diet, you have to be very careful to ensure items like peanuts, strawberries and eggs.

And as they get older, even if they are lucky enough to not suffer from food allergies, parents have to be conscious when it comes to packing school lunches—most schools have a ban on peanut products and many others have introduced bans on eggs, fish and dairy, depending on the needs of their students.

But there may be a little hope on the horizon for those suffering from peanut allergies.

A new process has been developed that can actually take the allergen factor out of regular old peanuts.

The way it works? The nuts are roasted, shelled and peeled and then treated in an enzymatic solution. The process is said to remove 98% of the allergens from the peanut. And the peanuts themselves have not been genetically modified in any way.

The treatment was developed by a joint team from Toronto-based Xemerge and North Carolina A&T University.

So far, skin prick tests have been promising, but there is no word yet on when these allergy-free peanuts will actually be hitting shelves.

Imagine what this could mean for those suffering with peanut allergies (not to mention the kid that won’t eat anything for lunch but PB&J!).
