New Guidelines Suggest That Babies Should Not Drink Fruit Juice

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies under 1 should not drink fruit juice

According to new guidelines from the American Association of Pediatrics, babies under the age of one should not drink fruit juice.

Previously, fruit juice was recommended by pediatricians as a source of Vitamin C and an extra source of water for healthy infants and young children. Former guidelines suggested that it was suitable for babies to drink after six months. Now, new research has found that it serves "virtually no role" during the first year of a child's life.

The high sugar content is believed to contribute to calorie consumption and "the lack of protein and fiber in juice can predispose to inappropriate weight gain (too much or too little)."

In the new guidelines published in the journal Pediatricsdoctors said that babies should drink breastmilk or formula as their primary source of nutrition. Juice should not be introduced until they are at least 12 months old and should be limited to 4 ounces a day between the ages of one and three. A maximum of 6 ounces of juice is recommended for children between 4 and 6 years old, and 8 ounces for children age 7 and older.

Toddlers should not be given juice from "bottles or easily transportable covered cups that allow them to consume juice easily throughout the day. Toddlers should not be given juice at bedtime."

To ensure that children meet their recommended daily intake, they should be encouraged to eat whole fruit.
