New study finds that children with egg allergies can safely get the flu vaccine

I'm not sure if it's bad or not that I didn't realize that children under five should be getting the yearly flu vaccine. When H1N1 spread like wildfire, I lined up with the throngs of people with my husband and daughter to get us all vaccinated. But, in general, I do not get the yearly flu shot for myself or for my children.

My close friend who is an immunization nurse has long told me about the benefits and why I should get it. But I don't bother unless there is a particularly aggressive strain that the current formulation includes, like in the case of H1N1.

Any one who has taken their young children to the doctor was asked at about the six month mark if their children have known egg allergies. This is because many vaccines include egg protein because they are grown in chicken eggs.

A study was just released, however, saying that the amount of egg protein in today's vaccines is minimal and only in the rarest of cases does a recipient with an allergy (more often than not, a child under the age of fivve) have an adverse reaction, and even then, the reaction is usually minor. The conclusion of the study is that parents who chose not to get the flu shot because of the risk of a reaction should have their fears allayed and go ahead with the flu shot to protect their children from the illness.

Here's the thing. The flu shot is a predictor. It bets on what the upcoming flu season's main strain will be and vaccinates against getting a severe case of it. And the flu is no joke. Many people think they have the flu when all they have is a bad cold. The flu is seriously, debilitating and can, in young children, lead to serious issues and complications. So there is value in being vaccinated against it, if you can be.

But the flu shot doesn't vaccinate against all strains of the flu, only the ones it predicts will be aggressive. So if the prediction is wrong, and you get the bug the flu shot didn't include in that years formulation, you're out of luck and can expect to be bedridden.

There is reason to get the flu shot if you think it's beneficial. It can't hurt. Apparently, even if you have egg allergies.
