Ontario Will Become First Province To Ban Waitlist Fees For Child Care

Frustrated parents can rejoice as fees will be banned by September 1

Many Canadian parents are no strangers to the epic battle to get their kids into decent child care.

And while we’re not about to inform you of a magic formula for sidestepping the waitlists and emotional minefields associated with the process, we can at least report an extremely positive development.

Starting September 1, waitlist fees and deposits will be banned for licensed and home-based childcare centres in Ontario.

Education Minister Mitzie Hunter announced the news today. "Parents shouldn't be burdened with hardship when they're working for child care,” said Hunter to CBC. “We feel it takes advantage of them when they're only trying to take care of their children."

The ban aims to save families hundreds of dollars on waitlistsmoney which is often not refunded, even if children never manage to grab a child care spot.

Waitlists will also make information on admission more transparent, and become available for families to view by January 2017.
