5 Road Trip Worthy Summer Getaways In Ontario

If you live in Ontario, these five destinations are perfect for a family road trip this summer

If you’re traveling in Canada with your kids in tow, finding a destination that will please everyone can be daunting. We’ve rounded up our top picks for a family-pleasing trip this summer.

Quebec City

The kids will love the sights in Old Quebec, where a visit to Chateau Frontenac and the fortification are a must. Adults will love the gastronomic offerings, bars and historic sights. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, drive out to Ile d’Orleans and get lost driving around the scenic island and sampling fresh berries. This island is a foodie’s paradise with some of the best restaurants (be warned, they might be closed on weekends for weddings). Many of the homes are heritage farm houses so you can give your kids a glimpse at what it may have been like to live in Quebec in the 1800s. Bring your camera, the scenery is magical.

Montreal

Hop on a VIA train from Toronto or plan a road trip to this metropolitan city with French flair. Kids will love the Montreal Botanical garden, planetarium, Biodome and Olympic stadium, all within a short distance of each other. Plan a picnic on Mont Royal as the sun sets, and enjoy the festive energy of the tam tams in the park.

Kingston

Only a two and a half hour drive from Toronto, Kingston has plenty to offer. Cruise out to the 1000 islands, or visit UNESCO World Heritage-designated Fort Henry. For boat lovers, a cruise is a must, but it’s also worth stopping at the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes.

Niagara Falls

Nothing beats visiting Niagara Falls for the first time. Little kids will be amazed by the size and volume of water. Plan a Maid of the Mist boat tour on a hot day and follow that up with a winery tour. Many wineries are increasingly kid friendly, and will even offer grape juice from the winery so they can participate in “wine tasting” too! It’s a great opportunity to learn about agriculture in the region, and visit stunning winery houses that look like castles, which are sure to enchant little kids!

Georgian Bay

Whether you rent a cottage or go up to Wasaga Beach for a day trip, visiting Georgian Bay is a must-do this summer. The crystal clear water and beautiful beaches are a great reason to make the drive there, but nearby hiking trails and dozens of antique shops nearby are great draws for adults too.
