Everyday Sleep Essentials That Every Mom Should Have

Ensure that baby gets a safe and comfortable sleep with these effective items

We all know how difficult it can be to get baby to fall asleep (and stay asleep). Make the transition to sleep a little bit easier with these six classic products we swear by.

Mobile

A mobile above baby’s crib serves as an easy source of entertainment for your little one. Aside from providing a visual stimulus, a mobile with movement and sound can soothe baby to sleep. We like this choice from Fisher-Price that you can control from your smartphone or tablet. Activate the mobile’s spinning, turn on the light projection and select from three music options (with up to 30 minutes of playing time!) by simply using the supporting app.

Swaddle or Wearable Blanket

Soft and loose objects, such as blankets, can lead to suffocation or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) when placed in the crib of a baby under a year old. Instead, keep your munchkin safe and warm with a swaddle (until baby can roll over—usually about 2 months old) or a wearable blanket. We like this sleep bag from WeeUrban, which is made from breathable cotton and bamboo fabric and has sleeve openings to prevent overheating. Its darling design is printed with ink that is free of lead and phthalates and its gender-neutral colours are great for little boys and girls alike.

Sound Machine

A white noise machine can help babes drift off to sleep, with its gentle and relaxing sounds. A baby’s ears are very sensitive, so it’s best to select a product that has volume control and automatic shut off, like the Cloud b Tranquil Turtle. This cutie features both soothing ocean sounds and underwater-inspired light effects.

Glider

Rocking your babe in a glider can offer comfort and help put him to sleep—especially useful for when he wakes in the middle of the night. We like this beautiful upholstered glider chair from Canadian company Dutailier that doesn’t compromise your style and can be easily moved into another room once baby gets older.

Pacifier

A pacifier can help calm a fussy baby when nothing else seems to be working. Better yet, pacifier use is associated with a lower risk of SIDS. A simple and safe option is the Philips AVENT Soothie, which is BPA free and made of hospital-grade silicone.

Baby Monitor

Using a baby monitor to keep tabs on your little one while he sleeps will give you comfort when you aren’t in the same room. There is a wide array of baby monitors available and we especially like the ones that offer video, in addition to sound. Many parents love the simplicity and functionality of the Astra baby video monitor by Levana, which fits the above-mentioned criteria and also allows you to speak to baby through a two-way intercom or communicate with your partner when one of you is with baby.
