Anti-Gay Remarks Stir Up Trouble For Barilla Pasta

You know what is not good for business? Alienating a massive and ever growing market sector. But that’s just what pasta giant Barilla chairman, Guido Barilla is doing. And he appears to be okay with that.

“We won’t include gays in our ads, because we like the traditional family. If gays don’t like it, they can always eat another brand of pasta. Everyone is free to do what they want, provided it doesn’t bother anyone else,” John Aravosis personally translated Barilla saying for Mommyish.com.

And in a terrible attempt at back peddling, Barilla clarified “I apologize if my words have generated controversy or misunderstanding, or if they have hurt the sensibilities of some people. In the interview I simply wanted to highlight the central role of the woman in the family.”

So, to clarify, Barilla would ask same sex couples, and single dads to buy Catelli.

“I apologize if my words have generated controversy or misunderstanding.” I think we all understood loud and clear sir.

In July 2005, same sex marriage was legalized in the entire country of Canada.

As of August 2013, thirteen states in the U.S. recognized same sex marriage as a right. In fact 16 countries allow gay marriage and two (the U.S. and Mexico) have an expanding number of jurisdictions that do.

Gay families, recognized as such by law, are not going anywhere. And even if the law where they live says they do not recognize the union, they’re going to love each other and live as a family anyway. And they will grocery shop.

And let’s not forget that there are millions of people around the world who support the right of gay people to live, legally, as a family. There are millions of people around the world who heard or read Barilla’s comments and had jaws drop in disgust at the ignorance and felt the ‘clarification’ added insult to injury, literally.

Mr. Barilla needs some better PR managers. Or, maybe he needs to look into hiring some. Barilla was successful at one thing; chances are no gay people will be picking up Barilla for their next spaghetti night. What maybe he didn’t bank on, was that people who fundamentally disagree with him will choose a competitor now too. Or maybe he doesn’t care. Maybe Guido Barilla doesn’t want anyone who supports gay people to buy his products either. In that case, my family is happy to give him what he wants.
