8 Celebrities Who Had Children Later In Life

These powerful leading ladies show us it's never too late to have kids

Who said you had to be in your twenties or early thirties to have kids? These leading ladies prove that it simply isn’t true; there isn’t a clock ticking saying it has to happen right now—you’ve got time, no matter what stage of life you’re at. In fact, as these women put it, sometimes being more mature makes the transition into parenthood a much steadier ride. Here’s our list of celebrities who’ve had some (if not all) of their kids in their forties:

1. Gwen Stefani

At 44, Stefani welcomed her son Apollo Bowie Flynn into the world. Apollo joined siblings Kingston and Zuma, whom Stefani had in her thirties. The singer and songwriter explained in an interview with InStyle that the birth of Apollo was a surprise “miracle” and that it put her in “a whole new spiritual place.”

2. Halle Berry

The actress, film producer, and former fashion model gave birth to her first child, Nahlu when she was 41. She then had her son Maceo when she was 47. In an Instagram post on Mother’s Day, Berry posted a beautiful photo of herself when she was pregnant, captioned “Giving birth to my amazing children were two of the greatest of my life! Happy Mother’s Day to all!”

3. Mariah Carey

The GRAMMY winner mentioned to The Lowdown’s Diana Madison that her twins Monroe and Moroccan will be her only children. “Those are my two babies. I think they would be so jealous because they get upset when I pet the dog.” She gave birth to them when she was 42. Now the twins are five-years-old and will be making an appearance on Carey’s show, Mariah’s World, which debuts in December.

4. Nicole Kidman

At 40, Kidman gave birth to her daughter Sunday Rose and then at 43 she had another daughter, Faith. By the sounds of it, Kidman would be pleased to add more kids to her brood; in 2014 she told Elle, “Every month I’m like, ‘I hope I’m pregnant!’ I had my last one at 43. My grandmother had her last at 49.”

5. Meryl Streep

When the actress was 41, she had her fourth and final child, Louisa. Streep has mentioned that it’s a balancing act with being a mother and having a marriage and a career you find rewarding, but it’s the best kind of challenge. “I love acting of course, but being with my husband and children always brought me the greatest joy and happiness in life.”

6. Céline Dion

The GRAMMY winner gave birth to twins, Nelson and Eddy when she was 42. Her other son, René-Charles, was born in 2001 and all of her children were with husband, René Angélil who sadly passed away in January of 2016 after battling cancer. Dion had an emotional journey with IVF, going through six rounds before getting pregnant with the twins in 2010. Anticipating the arrival of the twins, Dion explained in a HELLO! exclusive that, “there’s no goal for me except that I want them to be healthy first of all. And grow up knowing that they’re loved.”

7. Tina Fey

The comedian/actress has two children, one of which was born when Fey was 41 in 2011. Her eldest is Alice and the youngest is Penelope. Fey worried about having a second child, how that would change things for her, but she soon decided that the love a child brings to life outweighed any worries. And now she happily has two daughters with her husband Jeff Richmond.

8. Eva Mendes

The Hitch actress waited until she was 40 to have her first child, Esmeralda. Then earlier this year, aged 42, Mendes had her second kid, another daughter named Amada. To be fair, she was holding out for a pretty awesome partner to make babies with; none other than Canadian super babe, Ryan Gosling. Well worth the wait, we think!
