Rebecca Eckler: How I Came Around to the Concept of Date Night

“Date Night” with your spouse turns out to be one of the most important aspects about parenting

I never used to understand the concept of “Date Night.” I always thought, heck, if you want to go out with your spouse, just do it! Why do you have to pick one night of the week to go on a “Date Night?” And why the hell do you have to put a name to that night? But, now, I’ll admit, I get it.

“Date Night” with your spouse turns out to be one of the most important aspects about parenting. “We need a Date Night,” I sighed to my fiancé. I couldn’t believe I uttered the words, “Date Night.” It seemed like forever since we had an actual conversation that didn’t include children coming in and out of the room, interrupting us, or that didn’t include talk about our children, or scheduling. I just wanted to go to an adult movie, with a lot of politically incorrect jokes, nudity and a ton of violence. Or I just wanted to go out for a calm dinner with a menu that didn’t include chicken fingers. Which is why, just recently, I started weekly “Date Nights” with my fiancé.

I think mostly I detested, or WAS judgmental about the term “Date Night.” But really, saying “Date Night” is a lot easier, and nicer, than saying, “I need a friggen night off from the kids and I want to recreate the old US, where we flirted and I got dressed up, without finding Cheerios in my bra!”

So, now, once a week, my fiancé and I will get a sitter and we will go to a R-rated movie and/or a restaurant with food on the menu that a child could not pronounce. Of course we have always loved each other. But there’s something about remembering that you also LIKE hanging out with each other that makes Date Night a Date Night.

And Date Night is not just about hanging out with your significant other after you have children. It’s the whole process. It’s about getting out of your mommy sweats, taking a long shower, with scented body wash, styling your hair, putting on a bit of makeup, dressing in something that not only makes you feel sexy, but also that you know your partner will find sexy.

It’s about bringing back those early days, when you first met, when you did all these things. It’s the whole Woo-factor. And, in truth, it doesn’t matter WHAT you do on date night, but that you have somehow managed to THINK and PLAN a date night. I’m all about Date Nights now.

I like when my fiancé opens the car door for me. I like carrying around a clutch and not a diaper bag. I like the fact that we can find other things to talk about then our children. Most of all Date Nights are fun! In reality Date Nights only last about three to five hours. But it is enough time to feel and remember why you fell in love with your spouse in the first place.

And when you walk in the door, after Date Night, even though you know your baby will wake you up at 5:30 a.m. and you have to get the other kids off to school, and reality sets in, at least you can say to yourself, “I love my children and my life.” And also, “I can’t wait for next week’s Date Night.”

If I can come around to the concept of Date Night, then anyone can.
