Rebecca Eckler: Why Is My Hair Falling Out?

Hair loss after pregnancy: Rebecca tackles the one pregnancy side effect no one ever discusses

Exactly three months after giving birth to my daughter, nine years ago, I started losing my hair. This is a perfectly normal occurrence after having a baby, something to do with hormones. Although it is perfectly normal, that didn’t mean I didn’t FREAK out.

I honestly thought something was majorly wrong with me, mostly because NO ONE told me this would happen. How not one person, considering I had many friends who had babies, never told me this little (HUGE!) tidbit of information is beyond me.

I remember crying to my daughter’s father, “Something is wrong with me!” When I would brush my hair, chunks would come out. Our drain was clogged with hair after I took a shower, so much so that I wanted to stop taking a shower altogether. My hair brush looked as if I had just brushed a dozen dogs without cleaning it. For a while, I stopped brushing my hair too.

So, this time around, after having my son, I was prepared for the whole hair-loss-this-is-the-most-awful-thing thing. But month three came and went and my hair was fine. Then month four came and went and I was fine. I got cocky thinking, “Well maybe it’s only girls that make you lose your hair.” Yeah. I got too cocky. Because on his fifth month birthday, on exactly that day, I was in the shower washing my hair and I noticed that when I rinsed out the conditioner, long strands of hair also came out of my head.

For the next few days, there was hair everywhere. Stuck on the soap. Clogging the shower drain again. In the sink. Again, this hair loss thing depresses me. Even though my hairdresser who I had to go see, because I had stopped brushing my hair and the ends were getting all matted, told me it would stop and already she could see some hair growing back, it DOES feel like the hair loss is never going to end.

But it’s hard to complain to my fiancé about this. I mean, he complains. He’s like, “Beck! Why is there so much hair all over the soap? You should have SEEN how much hair I got out of the drain!” I can’t complain to my fiancé because he is basically bald. “At least you HAVE hair,” he’ll say. Yes, this is true. Just not as much as I once had. The hair that is not on my head, well, you can pretty much find everywhere else around my house. And, yes, to make myself feel better, I do compare myself to my fiancé. “At least I have hair,” I say to myself. “At least I have hair.”
