Adorable Cakes For Baby's First Birthday

Picking a cake for baby's first birthday should be fun... just like the cake!

Your baby is one! Congratulations!

Now it's time to start planning a party to celebrate. And while your little one may still be a bit young to be eating a ton of sweets, birthday cakes are a delicious tradition that is hard to forget. Now-a-days, many parents opt for the "cake smash", which is exactly what it sounds like: you set the birthday boy or girl in front of a cake (in a contained area!) and let them go wild! It makes for some wonderful pictures and a ton of fun for everyone one involved, even if it does cause quite the mess.

There are so many options when it comes to birthday cakes that it may sometimes seem overwhelming. A few simple tips can make your selection process a bit easier.

Focus on the number

Being one is a really big deal, for you and your baby. So embrace the number and give it a place of honour on the birthday cake! Make it the focal point of your cake, using sprinkles, fondant or icing. Get super creative like the mulitple layered building block cake from Meandmyinsanity or take a simple, but beautiful, route like Kristen's Kitchen with this fluffly white cake with marshmallow icing.

Pick their favourite thing

Even at one year old, kids have things that they love more than anything else. A favourite toy, food or book is the perfect place to start creating your birthday cake masterpiece. This hungry little caterpillar cake and cupcake combo from iVillage is a great example of bringing a favourite story book character to life. And who, in the history of the world, knows a baby that doesn't love themselves some Cherrios? Betty Crocker definitely has the right idea with this one.

The cutest cake topper

Maybe baking, or cake design, is not your strong suit. Fair enough. But that doesn't mean you can't have an adoarable birthday cake at your baby's first birthday. Invest in a too-cute cake topper to bring a little excitement to a more basic cake. We love the rustic look of bunting, flags and, of course, the number one. The Vintage Mixer even gives us a great low sugar recipe, great for kids! And the cake from The Girl On The Go is literally the icing on a perfectly planned first birthday party!

Stick to a theme

Have you picked a theme for the party? If so, choosing a cake that fits with the theme will give the party a cohesive feel, and will make your decision process that much easier. Whether you are having an animal themed party or if you are focusing on Minnie Mouse, the sky is the limit!
