Freezer Food Frenzy: How To Stock Your Freezer Pre-Baby

Take a bit of time for freezer cooking now, and you’ll be thanking yourself for weeks after your baby arrives

Stocking your freezer with meals before your baby arrives is one of those things that seems like a great idea in theory, but in practice seems pretty overwhelming in the third trimester. Aren’t there a ton of other things to get done? And standing on those swollen feet for hours just sounds, well, exhausting. But rest assured: freezer cooking doesn’t need to be hard, and is 100% worth the effort. Here are some tips and recipes to get you started.

Tip #1: Lighten the load and make it fun

You know how people are always asking if there’s anything you need help with? This is a great time to take them up on the offer. Once you know what you’re going to make and have your ingredients on hand, round up a couple helpers, put some good tunes on and the time will fly by. When all the work is done, put your feet up with a mocktail or near beer and order pizza for supper!

Tip #2: Think in portions

Freezing your recipes in smaller or individual portions makes sense if you’re only feeding yourself and your partner—plus, they are faster to defrost and cook. If you’ve got other kids at home, or you don’t mind eating the same lasagna for several days in a row, it makes sense to freeze recipes in bigger or full batches. Freezing a mix of small and large portions gives you options.

Tip #3: Be prepared

Plan ahead for all the supplies you’ll need so that you’re not running to the store mid-cook, or trying to make do without. Large freezer bags, disposable aluminum casserole pans, plastic wrap and aluminum foil are essential, as are large labels and a Sharpie.

Get cooking!

The internet is a treasure trove of freezer cooking tips and recipes; here are a few tried, true, easy and delicious meals to get you started:

These freezer burritos from Shutterbean are fun to make, can be customized with all your favourite fillings, and reheat in just a couple minutes -- great for those moments when you realize you should have eaten something an hour ago.

It doesn’t get much more convenient than frozen pizza, but you don’t have to settle for the scarce toppings/cardboard crust supermarket variety. A recipe and two key tips for making homepage frozen pizza are available from The Kitchn.

Get someone manning the griddle and prep some Big Batch Pancakes from Die & Dish. The trick with freezing pancakes is to flash freeze them in a single layer; that way they won’t stick to each other once fully frozen. Frozen pancakes reheat nicely in the microwave or toaster.

It doesn’t have a great ring to it, but Quiche in a Bag couldn’t be simpler to prepare and cook, and all you have to do to cook it later is let the bag defrost overnight. This recipe is for a crustless quiche; if you keep frozen pie crusts on hand, you can omit the flour from the recipe and bake the filling in a crust to make a traditional quiche. Prepare a bunch of these and you’ll always have a protein-rich lunch or dinner option on hand.

Now that your freezer is stocked, the truly hard part begins – waiting for your baby, and trying not to dip into your stash of easy and tasty meals!
