Eight food additives and ingredients to watch out for


As parents we care about the health and well-being of our children. We make sure that we are protecting them from things like bumps, scrapes and harsh UV rays, but sometimes we forget that their little insides need protection as well. Even if we do try our hardest to keep them from eating unhealthy foods, it’s easy to miss the very ingredients we’re trying to protect them from. Some of the worst ingredients may even be published under another name to throw you off guard. Whether you are looking for healthier options or simply want information on the worst foods to feed your family these ingredients are public enemy number one. 



High-fructose Corn Syrup

High-fructose corn syrup has come under a lot of scrutiny lately and for good reason. It is used as an inexpensive alternative to cane sugar and the corn companies will tell you that they are exactly alike. In actuality this substance increases the risk of major health issues like type 2 diabetes and cancer; it is hard for the body to metabolize and may even predispose the body to turn fructose into fat. You will find this ingredient in many processed sweets, including beverages.


Trans Fats

This stuff is so bad that New York banned it. Once thought to be a healthy alternative to saturated fats, trans fats are in fact worse for you and your children than the saturated kinds. This not-so-heart-healthy ingredient can be found in things like margarine, crispy crackers, microwave popcorn and fast food.


Artificial Colouring

Artificial colouring in processed foods has been linked to allergic reactions, fatigue, skin rashes, hyperactive, headaches, and asthma symptoms. These dyes can be found in almost any kind of snack food including foods like fruit snacks and snack cakes.


Artificial Flavouring

As a rule, if your food needs to be artificially flavoured, it is probably not a healthy food. These food additives have been linked to allergic reactions, hyperactivity, and asthma. Artificial flavorings can be found in too many foods to name but you will see them in most processed foods and beverages.


Artificial Sweeteners

These sweeter than sugar additives are peddled as a way to cut calories. The fact of the matter is artificial sweeteners have been linked to weight gain, dizziness, hallucinations, headaches and even cancer.  Artificial sweeteners are mostly found in diet products.


Monosodium Glutamate

Better known as MSG this substance was once a hot button issue. While the public’s interest went away this flavor enhancer did not. When ingested, MSG can increase the appetite as well as causing a laundry list of dangerous conditions including headaches, nausea, weakness, edema, uneven heart rate, burning sensations and difficulty breathing.  You can still find MSG in many restaurant foods, salad dressings, soups and pre-packaged frozen meals. 


Benzoate Preservatives

These dangerous preservatives don’t get the attention in the media. Benzoate preservatives have been linked to hyperactivity, angioedema, asthma, rhinitis, dermatitis, and even tumors. They are used to keep fats from going rancid and are most commonly found in canned and jarred foods, flavoured beverages, and sweets. 



Once touted as the perfect fat substitute, this additive has lost flavour with most food producers, but is still used from time to time.  It has been shown to cause severe gastrointestinal distress including diarrhea and intestinal bleeding. Olestra is mostly found in baked and fried foods like chips and crackers. 

While these are the worst offenders there are still more out there. Skipping these dangerous additives is not always easy, but it is worth it. By finding a way to skip these eight harmful ingredients you will be able to sleep better at night knowing you are not filling your kids with harmful chemicals.
