Perfect Picnic Ideas For Kids!

It’s summertime and the living is easy… well, it’s certainly easier with this new twists on picnic recipe classics!

Summer is here at last, and with it comes a ton of fun, affordable entertainment options for the whole family. An oldie but a goodie is the summer picnic: it gives you the opportunity to unplug from the world, connect with your family, enjoy the great outdoors, and still sleep in your own bed at the end of the night!

But first: in order to have a perfect picnic, you need to have a safe one. And that of course, means sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. Apply sunscreen on yourself and your little ones at least 20 minutes before going out in the sun, and make sure to pack it so you can re-apply throughout the day. Also, make sure you pack enough cool water to keep the whole family hydrated all day long.

Finally, consider your perfect picnic menu. Most food guides recommend keeping highly perishable food like meat and dairy out for the fridge for no longer than one hour. So if you and your yummy picnic basket will be out in the sun for longer than an hour, stick to yummy fruit-, veggie-, and grain-based options.

Okay, with health and safety covered, now it’s time for the little pick-me-ups that will make your picnic perfection:

1) Summer sandwiches

Flower, animal or heart-shaped cookie cutters step up this summertime staple. Simply prepare your sandwich - cucumber and cream cheese is always a cool, refreshing classic - and press into it with your cookie cutters to create picnic-perfect shapes. It’s fun, easy and your kids will love it.

2) Mason jar salads

One fun, super-portable take on the fresh summer salad is to layer it in a mason jar. A large mason jar will keep your salad fresh and looks colourful and fun. The key to this technique is in the layers: start with the dressing at the bottom, followed by large, hearty vegetables (like tomatoes, cucumber, and peppers), then grains or protein, and then lettuce. Putting a hearty veg barrier between the greens and the dressing is the key to keeping this salad crisp, not soggy. (Image via Live In The Now)

3) Fruit Kebabs

This sweet treat is a twist on a savoury BBQ standby. For a punch of variety and flavour, try a mix of strawberries, bananas, kiwi and pineapple, or whatever fruits are your family’s favourites. To make this dessert safe and kid-friendly, use plastic lollipop sticks instead of the traditional metal or wooden skewer. These sticks can be purchased at any craft story, and as an eco-friendly bonus, they can be washed and used again and again!

These tips can help elevate your summer recipe staples, but of course most important ingredients to a perfect picnic are you and your family. Bon appetit!
