10 Non-Food Treats To Hand Out This Halloween

None of the sugar, all of the fun! Trick-or-treaters will love these treats just as much as candy

Who said treats at Halloween have to be edible? These ten ideas for fun non-food treats to hand out will round out the sugar in any trick-or-treater’s loot bag, and won’t break the bank either.

1. You can get bulk packages of Play Doh in miniature cans at Costco for the same or less as you’d spend on chocolate or candy. Pretty much everyone loves Play Doh, so this treat is guaranteed to be well received!

2. The fun of Halloween will last a little longer with temporary tattoos. The dollar store will have lots of selection – buy a bunch of sheets and cut them into smaller pieces with two or three tattoos.

3. Glow sticks are a hit with both kids and their parents – they’re fun and also help little treat or treaters be seen in the dark. Look for sticks and bracelets at the dollar store or craft store dollar bins.

4. Bubbles are a perennial favourite. Order a case of tiny bottles of Halloween-themed bubbles online (discount and dollar stores may carry them too) – it’s entirely possible the kids will be wearing snowsuits under their costumes, and will really appreciate a little taste of summer!

5. A classic Halloween accessory: the spider ring! Look for inexpensive plastic Halloween-themed rings (eyeballs, bats, skulls, etc.) at party supply or dollar stores. (Just be careful not to freak yourself out when you see a bowl full of them out of the corner of your eye.)

6. Another timeless choice: stickers. Halloween themed, glow in the dark, or whatever your fancy, stickers are sure to please every treat-or-treater who comes to your door. Again, the dollar store is a great place to pick up packages or rolls that can be separated into smaller sections.

7. Why make kids bounce off the walls from sugar when they could be bouncing super bouncy balls instead? Look for bulk packs at party supply or dollar stores. Bonus points for glow-in-the-dark or Halloween colours.

8. Cuts or scrapes or not, kids love fun latex bandages. At a bandage or two per trick-or-treater, a couple of boxes of latex bandaids with fun patterns or favourite characters on them will have you covered. Major brands Band-Aid, Curad, Elastoplast, and Nexcare all make them.

9. Halloween pencils, pencil toppers, or erasers. The dollar store is your go-to place to stock up on bulk packs of stationery items that kids will love using, Halloween themed or otherwise.

10. It doesn’t get much easier than regular old balloons. They come in so many colours and patterns – buy a bunch of packages from a party supply store and throw them in a bowl so kids can choose their favourites.

11. This is a bonus option, that is all candy but with zero of the sugar. Xyla lollipops are are made with xylitol, a natural sweetener that won't harm kids' teeth and doesn't have any of the side effects of sugar or most artificial sweeteners.

Some of these items are not suitable for toddlers, so be careful what you hand out to the smallest of trick-or-treaters at your door. It might be a good idea to have a “little kids only” stash made up of safe items (bandages, stickers, and tattoos all work well).
