6 Ways To Celebrate Earth Hour With Your Kids

Earth Hour, a time to shut off your lights to help create a more sustainable future, often sneaks up on us and we are left wondering what to do with our families during this important hour. Read on for our top 6 ideas that will help you pass this hour.

On March 29th at 8:30 p.m. (local time), it will be Earth Hour, a time to shut off your lights and conserve some enegy to help save our home - planet earth. Although your kids may groan at the prospect of a Saturday evening with no TV, tablets, smartphones or computers, planning some fun, quality-time activities with your family can help make this hour pass, in a flash!

Hold an Earth Hour Street Party

Rally your neighbours and invite them over for a fun Earth Hour party. Turn off all of the lights and use candles to illuminate your house. Serve up delectable little snacks (that can be made ahead of time) like spiced popcorn, no-nuts n bolts, crudites and hummus and of course, chocolate chip cookies! This is a fun way to get to know your neighbours, in a whole different light!

Play Hide n Seek, In The Dark!

If your kids are anything like my kids, they LOVE playing hide and seek. Make it even more fun by telling them they will get to play it in the dark to celebrate this special hour! Hand everyone a flashlight (to avoid any tumbles) and let your kids have a ball hiding in the dark, while you and your partner try to find them!

Set Up A Star-Gazing Station

Earth Hour is a perfect opportunity to teach your kids a little more about their home - planet earth. Lay out some sleeping bags, pillows and some warm blankets in your backyard and have fun gazing at the stars with your kids. Taking in the beauty that Earth Hour is attempting to preserve is a great way to bond together as a family and remember why we all need to try to live a little more consciously.

Make It Board Game Night, By Candlelight!

What could be more fun then playing board games with your family, by candle-light! There are so many games available, from Monopoly to Pictionary to card games, like Go-Fish. Just let your kids pick their favourite and set our for an hour of quality family fun. Up-the-ante of this activity by serving chocolate fondue with fresh chunks of fruit and ripe strawberries. We promise your kids will love you (even more!) after this special treat.

Glow In The Dark Fun

Transform your living room, playroom or the kids bedrooms into a glow-in-the-dark hub. Grab some coloured glowsticks, glow-in-the-dark toys and glow-in-the-dark stickers from your local dollar store or craft supply shop and let your kids go-to-town creating their very own illuminated space. We promise, this activity will extend WAY beyond, the alloted hour!

Have An Indoor Picnic

Grab a picnic blanket and lay it out on the floor in the middle of your family room or kitchen. Decorate the area with little tea lights or candles to make it feel like you are outdoors. Use your kids favourite cups, plates and (cloth) napkins and arrange picnic type foods (think sandwiches, chips, veggies and dip) inside a wicker basket. After dinner, surprise them with ice cream cones or home-made popsicles!
