Movies For You And Your Kids To Get Excited About This Summer

Grab the popcorn! Summer movie releases that you and your kids will love

We’re all excited for summer and all the outdoor fun it brings, but sometimes there’s nothing like relaxing in an air-conditioned theatre or the comfort of your own home. If you’re looking to beat the summer heat, try catching one of the following family-friendly films with your little ones:

In Theatres:

How To Train Your Dragon 2 - June 13

Dragons and Vikings may be united on the isle of Berk, but Hiccup and Toothless’ story doesn’t stop there! How to Train Your Dragon 2 sees the best friends’ adventures interrupted by the discovery of a mysterious ice cave that is home to a wild species of dragons and an enigmatic figure known as the Dragon Rider. Soon, Hiccup and Toothless must draw on the strength of their bond to return peace and harmony to the world, and protect the future of humans and dragons alike. It’s not every day that your little one’s most anticipated movie is also the hit of the Cannes film festival, so why not check this one out?

Maleficent - In Theatres Now

Disney revisits the age-old tale of Sleeping Beauty with a dark twist — told from the perspective of Maleficent, this film acts as an origin story for the infamous villainess. Equal parts style and substance, Maleficent is visually stunning and has a lot to say about the way our actions shape us and the possibility of redemption for everyone. The film’s scarier scenes and complex themes make it a bit mature for little ones, but older children will be entranced by this dreamy, gothic retelling of a classic fairy tale, and even parents are sure to fall under its spell.

Planes: Fire & Rescue - July 18

Red alert! Summer is about to get even hotter with the arrival of Planes: Fire & Rescue. This latest instalment of the franchise started by Cars sees the return of kids’ favourite aircraft, Dusty Crophopper. When the famed flyer learns a damaged engine means he can never race again, he vows not to let the news keep him grounded. Instead, he joins forces with a fleet of new pals on the Fire & Rescue aviation squad. Things heat up quickly when the team has to work together to put out a massive forest fire, and Dusty learns to soar to new nights of heroism.

On DVD And Blu-ray:

The Lego Movie - June 17

Even if you haven’t yet seen the smash hit of the spring, you’ve probably been humming the tunes; if you have seen it, you know it’s become an instant kids’ classic they’ll want to see again and again. When ordinary Lego man Emmet is identified as the “extraordinary one” who will save the Lego universe, he must call upon his friends to help him defeat the evil villain, Lord Business. The Lego Movie has great gags, catchy tunes and stresses the importance of teamwork. “Everything is Awesome” … when you’re watching this flick with your family!

Muppets Most Wanted - August 12

The Muppets are that rare form of entertainment that truly spans generations — chances are you grew up on the Muppets, and now so can your kids. This latest Muppet caper sees Kermit jailed when he is impersonated by notorious thief and Kermit-lookalike, Constantine. Kermit must fight to escape from prison as the Muppet gang slowly get wise to Constantine’s stolen-identity scheme and try to prevent him from committing the con of the century. Muppets Most Wanted combines classic zany Muppet antics with fun cameos by actors such as Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey.
