The Perfect Summer Crafts For Kids

We turn to Pinterest to find our favourite crafts for the last few weeks of summer

Summer is coming to a close, and in some areas of the country the weather is already turning towards fall. So take the time to stay out of the rain and get your craft on!

Paper Plate Jellyfish

This craft is an easy and fun DIY for younger and older kids. Pick up inexpensive paper plates that can be painted or are already in a fun colour. Find loose bits of yarn, string and pipe cleaners and have an adult cut them into strips. The adult can pre-punch holes in the plates so kids can easily thread the string through, or you can use tape and glue instead. These would make great porch decorations or a mobile for a kids room! Sponge Balls

This classic summer craft is easy
to make and fun to play with. Pick up inexpensive kitchen sponges at the dollar store in your favourite colours. While they’re still wet, cut the sponges lengthwise into half-inch thick strips. Have your child help you tie a string around the middle and double knot tightly to create the sponge pompom. Throw them into the kiddie pool for an eco-friendly “water balloon fight” or have fun playing catch and getting wet on a hot day. Via Cheap Crafting

Frozen Sidewalk Chalk

Get a popsicle mould and fill it with water, cornstarch and paint, and pop the mould into the freezer to create these frozen sidewalk chalks. Kids can have fun doodling on the driveway or playing games. Via Babble

Recycled Birdhouses

This craft is a great way to upcycle old plastic bottles and give birds a home or a place to eat. Kids can have fun painting bottles or gluing on newspaper or coloured paper to decorate the houses. An adult can carefully cut a hole for the birdhouse or bird feeder and string them up outside. Via Pinterest

Ocean Slime

Playing with slime is always fun, but once it’s warm outside you can take the mess out of the house. This recipe for ocean slime is easy to make and the glitter is a fun touch! Kids can learn the basics of mixing ingredients and measuring, and have fun playing with the results. Via Buggy and Buddy

Paper Pinwheels

Perfect for celebrating holidays or decorating the garden, this classic craft is straight-forward and a great way to recycle cereal boxes or other pretty scrapbooking leftovers. Via Mom4Real

Clay Pots

Polymer clay is readily available at most dollar stores or craft stores. Kids can have fun moulding the clay into shapes and then decorating them later with glitter or paint. While the clay is still wet, you can also press in seashells you collect from the beach which is a great memento! Kids can also have fun planting seeds or little succulents and watching them grow. Moon Sand

Kinetic sand is one of the hottest toys of 2014. The sensory toy is great for younger and older children, but can be a bit expensive in the store. Luckily, you can make it easily at home by mixing sand, cornstarch and water. Via Skip To My Lou

Bird Feeder Cookies

This craft is easy for kids to make, and they will have fun watching the birds come for a snack. Simply apply peanut butter to shortbread cookies and sprinkle birdseed onto the cookie. Via Pinterest
