How to Raise a Happy Child

Five secrets every parent should know

It doesn’t matter your background, how much money you make or how much experience you have when it comes to raising kids – mistakes will happen. Children know what the word  sorry means from a young age. It is also important that children realize they are not the only ones who make mistakes, Mommies and Daddies make them too. The secret is to acknowledge the fact that you did in fact make the mistake, apologize and learn from the experience.

Space

Everyone needs their own space to just be. Just as us adults need time to ourselves, so do children. As children get older they want their own space. They need their independence. They need time to be alone, to think their own thoughts and just be their own person. Space will help them increase their sense of being, confidence and overall sense of awareness. The secret is to remember to give a child space because it is important and is a good thing.

It's Okay to Say No

No parent likes to tell their child of no. Some parents might even feel uncomfortable telling their child “no”. It has to be done. There is no way around it and it is important lesson for kids to learn. Saying “no” sets boundaries and rules, both of which are extremely important to set down at a young age. The secret is to learn to say “no” and at the same time keep it consistent.

Monkey See, Monkey Do

No matter how much you tell your children not to copy the things you do, at some point they will explore and copy your behaviour or language. It could be a small thing such as the funny face you make, to something harder habit to get rid of like a swear word or bad eating habits. What children see and practice growing up will be a lifelong habit. The secret is to be aware of your own actions and behaviour.

Always a Reason

A child or toddler always does something for a reason. So when a parent says their child is crying or being difficult for no apparent reason that is probably not true. The parent may not know why the child is crying or misbehaving, but there is always a reason. The secret is to take the time to find out if the child is hungry, needs attention, needs to be changed, needs to be fed or just wants to be with their parents and feel secure. If a child is crying or being difficult, there is a reason. The secret is to find out why.
