This School Replaced Detention With Meditation And Everyone Else Should Do The Same

Robert W. Coleman School in Baltimore have scrapped detention and seen surprising results among their students. Should we all follow suit?

What if we were less “Hmm” and more “Ohm” when it comes to children?

When a child misbehaves we give them a time out. And when a student misbehaves, teachers give them a detention.

It’s so ingrained in us to believe this to be right course of action, that it’s hard to conceive of any other steps being taken.

But one school has completely scrapped detention. Robert W. Coleman School in Baltimore instead sends stressed and angry children to the 'Mindful Moment Room'.

The room is a “brightly coloured oasis of calm,” filled with “lamps, decorations and purple pillows”.

Misbehaving children are encouraged to breathe deeply, meditate in silence, or even practice yoga.

The idea is all part of an afterschool programme called “Holistic Me” which teaches children to practice mindful meditation whilst encouraging them to speak with behavioural professionals.

And the best part? It’s working. Since the start of last year, when the program was introduced, the grade school has not suspended a single child from the school.

The idea of getting children to talk about why they feel the way they do and giving them a chance to de-stress and reboot is so smart and downright obvious, it’s incredible that no one has tried it before.

Perhaps a lack of resources and old habits will prevent this initiative from becoming the norm. But we can only commend Robert W. Coleman School for getting it so right.

If we stopped combatting anger with anger, we might actually be able to tap into why kids act the way the do —rather than just punishing them for what we do not understand.
