5 Things New Moms Really Want for Mother's Day

Hint: the best things in life are free (or almost) especially on Mother's Day!

Mother’s Day is coming up, and it can be a little daunting to think of the perfect gift, especially for a mom being celebrated for the first time (and by default, whose children are too young to execute the perfect gift plan). Sure, most moms would love a day at the spa or new purse or something shiny and bright…but most families with young kids are not rolling in extra cash. And while no one ever turned down a beautifully-wrapped gift, sometimes the best things in life really are free, or almost. Whether you’re a partner of a new mom, or just someone who wants to remind her of how special she is, here are some ways to show it:

Heartfelt props

When you’re a new mom, your confidence is always slowly being built up only to be knocked down a little. What better time to put pen to paper and write out what you truly admire about the mom you care about? Specific examples mean the most – nothing beats the knowledge that someone else notices the seemingly invisible things that mother do. Add an inexpensive bouquet of tulips or daffodils – or even dandelions from the yard! -- and you’ve got a perfect gift.

A good meal (that someone else cooked)

If she does most of the cooking, it would be a pleasant change of routine for her to play with the kids (or read in her room, go for a run, etc.) while someone else cooks… even better if it’s her favourite meal. A dinner out is always nice, but somehow knowing that someone who didn’t get paid to do the cooking prepared the meal is extra meaningful.

 Me time

We often joke that the mundane chore of grocery shopping becomes a blissful oasis when unaccompanied by a baby or young kids, but it’s kind of true. That said, something a little more deliberate and leisurely would be great! Sending her out for a leisurely afternoon of reading at a coffee shop or getting a quickie pedicure may be just what she needs – so make it happen for her.

A family portrait

As moms, we are always snapping photos of our beautiful babies, but how often are we in the frame? The chance to have a portrait taken, complete with uninterrupted time to get dressed, hair done and makeup applied (and with minimal grumbling from spouses) would be cherished by many moms. No need to book an expensive photographer; ask a friend with an eye for good shots and a decent camera, and cross your fingers for decent spring weather. Frame the best shots, and she’ll have something special to remind her of the day all year round.

A sleep-in

Sleep-ins are tough to come by, especially if you’re a nursing mom. While feeding schedules may make it tough to truly get a solid 12 hours, if the intent is there, you can get as close to as proper sleep-in as possible by making sure she gets to go back to bed as soon as the baby is fed. Don’t let diaper changes or other tasks delay her return to dreamland! Later on, breakfast in bed (or even just coffee and a croissant) would not be amiss!
