Stay On Budget With These Spring Saving Tips For Families

3 ways to save on family-related expenses as we head into the warmer weather

happy family, springtime family fun, family on a budget, how to stay on a budget

Spring is here, at last! And although it’s a welcome relief from the snow and cold, it won’t be long before we’re longing for even warmer weather, and the sun and fun of summer.

Summer fun can add up, though—all those trips, impromptu ice cream runs and the search for the perfect (or good enough) bathing suit can take a toll on your chequing account. Spring is actually the perfect time to stock up on summer gear, clothing and other essentials. Here are a few key ways to save money before the temperatures rise.

Buy used, buy used, buy used

This is the single best way to save money when clothing and equipping your family. Keep an eye out for babies’ and kids’ clothing and gear consignment sales as most organizations run them in the spring and the fall. This is the perfect place to look for clothing for the next season, at a fraction of the price of new, and without the time required to sort through racks and racks at second-hand stores.

Garage sales will soon be popping up, if they haven’t already. People are cleaning out their garages and homes as part of their spring cleaning, and you can reap all the benefits. You’ll often be able to get babies’ and kids’ summer equipment for a steal—think kiddie pools, pool accessories, toddler play structure parts like swings and slides, bouncy castles, etc. You can also check Kijiji and Craigslist for other gently used items.

Use coupons and catch the sales

We always underestimate how much sunscreen we’ll need over the summer. So, why not start watching for sales and stocking up now, rather than waiting until you’re out and you’re stuck paying full price? Keep an eye out for coupons, too, and visit manufacturer websites and social media pages for more deals. It’s worth the effort, especially with the price of gentle baby sunscreens, or if you prefer an expensive brand.

Other items to buy now on sale: swim diapers and bug spray or wipes.

Plan now to save money (and aggravation) later

Ever tried to buy rainboots in the middle of the spring rainy season? For some reason, stores begin stocking them in January and frustratingly, most of the stock seems to be gone by the time you really need it!

For the best selection and prices, think ahead to any bigger-ticket items that you anticipate needing this summer (think sunshades, wagons, bikes, etc.), and watch the flyers for sales. The further into a season we get, the less availability and choice there is for most seasonal items and you may be stuck paying regular prices for items that don’t really fit your needs or preferences. Now is the time to look for sunhats, sandals, swimsuits/shirts, sunglasses, etc.

With a little forethought now, you can simplify and save money on all those summer adventures before they even begin!
