Babymoon Destination: Orlando, Florida

It may not be the first place you think of for a pre-baby vacation, but here’s why Orlando can’t be missed

We all know that a few years after baby arrives, Orlando, Florida is the place to go as a family. You’ve got Disney, Universal Studios, Sea World… what more do you need?

Here’s a little secret for you, Orlando is the perfect destination for a quiet, relaxing vacation before baby #1 arrives (or #2 if you’ve got an awesome babysitter!). You just have to look beyond the hustle and bustle of the theme parks.

And at this time of year, with January coming on hard and fast, is there anything better than an escape to a warmer climate?

Where To Stay

Start your trip off with a bit of luxury by staying at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. The property is set on 500 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and boasts on-site golfing at the Greg Norman Signature Golf course. Not into golfing? The gorgeous spa facilities, multiple pools and amazing dining options are sure to please even the most sophisticated traveler.

The Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress is only a mile away from the Orlando theme parks, but has a secluded feel even when you’re in the heart of it all. Keep busy in your time onsite with a tennis club, full service spa and a half acre pool with 12 of its own waterfalls.

Even if visiting the theme parks is not on your list of things to do, that doesn’t mean you can’t stay at one of their amazing resorts. Our pick for a romantic getaway? Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Discover award-winning dining, white-sand beaches, spectacular views and dazzling pools during your stay. And if you want to get a photo with Elsa, well Magic Kingdom is just a short walk away.

Where To Eat

Even if you don’t find yourself staying at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, it is worth a visit to the newly opened Highball & Harvest restaurant for dinner. A modern take on Southern-inspired classics, Highball & Harvest’s menu is brimming with locally grown produce (they actually have their own 7,000 square foot garden where they grow seasonal produce).

Want dinner and a view? With sweeping lake views from the patio, Eddie V’s Prime Seafood is definitely the place you want to be. Beautifully presented seafood dishes combined with amazing service makes Eddie V’s a can’t miss stop.

If you are looking for a place to enjoy a quick lunch or a casual dinner, look no further than The Coop. Located in the beautiful Winter Park area of Orlando, The Coop offers classic comfort foods made from scratch daily. Don’t miss the Chicken N’ Waffles and be sure to finish off with an Icebox Pie!

What to do

A lot of things are off the table in Orlando once you are pregnant… well just the one thing really: theme parks. So what are you going to do with all the time you aren’t lounging by the pool?

If you are already planning to visit The Coop, be sure to enjoy everything else Winter Park has to offer. A suburb of Orlando, Winter Park is a great shopping destination with its very own “Rodeo Drive”. Park Avenue is a brick-paved street with great shopping and adorable outdoor cafes. Be sure to visit Max And Marley, an upscale children’s shop you won’t want to miss.

You can also take the Scenic Boat Tour on Lake Osceola. The hour long tour takes you to three lakes and along two man-made canals, with a knowledgeable tour guide who will teach you about Winter Park, originally founded by wealthy Easterners in the 1800s. Be sure to bring a hat and a bottle of water!

If you are looking for a bit of extra relaxation, The Ritz-Carlton Spa offers packages just for the mom-to-be. Enjoy a massage using specific pre-natal techniques to increase circulation, alleviate tired muscles and reduce water tension or get a Yummy Tummy treatment mask just for your growing belly.

Head into downtown Orlando and catch a Broadway show, the Orlando Ballet or a community performance at the brand new Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. If you are heading to Orlando this year, you’ll be one of the first to experience the new centre during its inaugural season.

With so much to do and see in Orlando, you’ll be hard pressed to stick to the theme parks ever again!
