How You Can Stay Active & Healthy Post-Baby

Fun ideas for getting active and staying fit with a new baby by your side

Is being a new mom seemingly keeping you from your pre-pregnancy workout routine or getting into shape in general? Not to fret. If you are at least six weeks post-natal (or approximately eight weeks if you had a caesarian section) and your body feels ready, plus your doctor has given you the green light to exercise, there are many ways to stay active with a new baby in tow! Whether you’re short on alone time or simply can’t bring yourself to part with your little one, you can find some great post-natal workout ideas here.

Baby Yoga

Is this the right class for my baby?

A post-natal yoga class that incorporates your munchkin into the workouts is a popular choice for many new moms who want to get back into shape, or for dads and other caregivers who want to bond with baby. These programs are designed for babies that are between a few weeks old (check with the program you choose for specific age recommendations) and the crawling stage.

The workout

At a baby yoga class, you can typically expect to be instructed through different poses and sequences that focus on strengthening and toning the body. Baby will watch from a mat and you will have the option to incorporate your little one in parts of your workout. There may even be allotted time for special movements or a massage for baby. Many sessions include a post-workout discussion, where you can talk with your class about parenting issues and experiences.

Aquatic Exercise

Babies can start swimming with assistance as early as four months, although many classes ask that babies be at least six months old. It is strongly encouraged or required that your little one wear a swim diaper to prevent accidents.

The workout

Aqua fit classes for moms (or dads!) and babies are offered privately or at your city’s park and recreation centres in a heated pool to prevent babies from getting too cold. You will get a great non-impact workout while your darling watches from a floaty or is used as additional weight before getting his or her own time to splash around and really experience the water.

Stroller Fitness

Is this the right class for my baby?

For power walking, baby should be at least six weeks old. If you plan on running, wait until he or she is at least six months old and if you’re going on uneven terrain, baby should be nine months old (when the spine is stronger).

The workout

Stroller fitness classes come in a range of forms and incorporate power walking with a stroller (a jogging stroller isn't necessary) with anything from high intensity interval training (HIIT), yoga-inspired exercises and cardio and resistance training using the outdoor environment. It’s a fun full-body workout where you’ll burn calories and build friendships with other new moms.

Prefer to workout alone? Consider going on a hike with your babe in a carrier or sling, attending a gym that has a child care centre or working out at home while baby takes a nap.
