Natural Mosquito Repellants & Bite Remedies

How to protect yourself and your kids from mosquitoes naturally

With an ever-growing emphasis being placed on clean eating and healthy living, home remedies are also making comeback. Warm weather brings the ever-constant threat of West Nile. While Health Canada advises Canadians to wear light, full length clothing, avoid outdoors at dusk and dawn and use bug replant containing DEET, many are denouncing the use of chemicals whenever possible. Is bug repellant an area where being chemical-free is possible? Here are some of the most tried and true natural bug repellants and bite remedies.

Lemongrass, peppermint and purification with water

Young Living Essential Oils boasts recipes for all types of insect repellant, including this triple threat for mosquitoes. This particular combination is also said to work on ticks. The purification oil itself works not only as a repellant, but also as a remedy for bug bites and stings.

Apple Cider Vinegar, Garlic and B12

If you can stomach it, downing a couple teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, along with munching on some garlic and a vitamin containing B12 should make you unappealing to the insect population. The downside is that it may also make you unappealing to the human variety as well!

Citrus Fruits

Both the consumption of citrus fruits (including oranges, lemons and limes) and wearing the scent can help to repel hungry insects. The sweet yet tart scent is a turn-off for blood hungry mosquitoes. While eating the delicious fruits may be the easiest way to exude the scent, boiling thinly sliced citrus fruit and spraying on the water will also be effective.

Vinegar

An essential, natural ingredient for everything from bug repellants to cleaning supplies, vinegar also has healing properties. Home remedies abound with using a dab of straight vinegar on bothersome bug bites for instant relief.
