Richard Branson's New Paternity Policy Gives New Parents Full Year Off

Employees at Virgin will receive a full year of paid paternity leave thanks to billionaire Richard Branson

In a move that is gaining tons of positive response, new parents at Virgin Group will be given a year of full pay paternity leave, founder Richard Branson announced this week.

New mothers and fathers (including adoptive parents), who have been with the company for more than four years will be offered a full year off to care for their newborn, while receiving 100 percent of their salary. The percentage varies depending on years of service, with those who have been with the company less than two years receiving 25 per cent.

“If you take care of your employees they will take care of your business,” Branson said in a statement.

“As a father and now a granddad to three wonderful grandchildren, I know how magical the first year of a child’s life is but also how much hard work it takes. I’m delighted that we can offer this support to our staff so that they can enjoy parental leave to the full as we continue to our work in changing business for good.”

The new policy is being hailed as groundbreaking, since many other companies are trying to save money by cutting the benefits of their employees. Typically in the states only mothers receive time off, and often it’s less than a year and they receive much less than full pay.

Virgin Group, founded by Branson in 1970, has a slew of subsidiary companies and businesses, including Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Mobile and Virgin Radio.

However this new policy is limited to the approximate 140 people working in Virgin Management offices in London and Geneva.
