3 Common Arguments of New Parents

How to avoid the common quarrels most first-time parents face

After nine months of waiting and preparing, your little bundle has finally arrived. And so has the lack of sleep, the irritability and the arguments. Read on to find out how to avoid the common quarrels most first-time parents face.

1. The Fatigue-Based Argument

A baby will keep you and your spouse busy all day and night, especially in the first few weeks. If a sensitive issue comes up and you or your partner feel an argument coming on, walk away. Agree to discuss the matter after a power nap. When you’ve been up all night, it’s a little harder to remain calm and you’re bound to get on each other’s nerves and allow the argument to get out of control.

2. The Sex Argument

When it comes to having sex post baby, this might be the last thing on a new mom’s mind. However, dad may feel differently. It’s important to remember that may women don’t feel very sexy soon after birth and those hormones are still raging. A woman should only resume having sex after getting the OK from her doctor (usually after six weeks) and when she is emotionally ready to. Guys, you’ll just have to be patient. Don’t push the mother of your child to jump back in the sack before she’s ready.

3. The “You’re Not Helping Me” Argument

For first-time parents, it often seems to each person like their partner isn’t helping out enough. The fact of the matter is, there is just a lot of work to be done. How can something so small create so much work? No answers to that question but we can assure you it’s true. Make a list of all the things that need to get done now that baby is here: bathing, feeding, changing diapers, grocery shopping, house cleaning and other household chores. Designate some chores to your partner and some to yourself. It’s important to work out this list together. Stick the list somewhere visible, like on the fridge. Not only to remember what you have to do but to remind your partner of all you do each day when they start feeling like you’re not helping out enough.
