Planning Date Night

Fun and affordable date night ideas so you and your spouse can reconnect

Date nights certainly become more elusive once you have a kid, and exponentially more difficult to plan with each child. As time becomes more hardto come by with children, so too does money. Coming up with creative, fun and affordable date night ideas can be a challenge. Here are some ideas to get you and your spouse out of the house for a fun night out, or, if you can’t find a sitter, who says you can’t have a date at home?

Art galleries are not just for school field trips

You don’t have to be an art aficionado to enjoy browsing through an art gallery. Most big cities have large enough galleries to spend a nice amount of time roaming and talking about what you love (or don’t understand!) about art. And most will offer a free evening every week. In addition to offering a great topic of conversation, art galleries also allow you to roam at your leisure. Being able to rush or browse on your own schedule is a great bonus for parents who might find it harder to be somewhere and then need to leave at a particular time.

Try something sporty, like mini golf or bowling

The good thing about mini golf or bowling is that the worse you are the funnier and thus more fun it is. And you don’t need to be particularly ‘sporty’ for either. In theory you need good aim. But missing shots make for some good giggles and at least at bowling you can usually enjoy fries and a beer in between frames.

Go star gazing

Driving out to a remote location to stare up at the stars can be romantic and relaxing. It also offers a nice quiet atmosphere where you can have a conversation and not risk being interrupted. In the colder months, bringing along a thermos filled with hot chocolate will add to the cozy atmosphere.

Dinner and a movie can be an at home activity too

If you can’t get a babysitter you can still swing a fancy dinner and a movie at home and have it be special. Divide up courses for dinner and have one person make the main dish and the other person make an appetizer and dessert.  Turn down the lights, light a candle and enjoy some adult conversation. Pop some popcorn in the microwave after (or stove top if you’re feeling old school) and throw on a movie and relax and enjoy.

You’d be surprised how fun board games can be

It’s not the obvious thing for adults to gravitate to but breaking out an old board game (no, not your kid’s Candy Land) can be a great way to spend an evening. Classic games like Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit are still as fun to play as adults as they were when we were kids and now we might be a little better at them! It can be especially fun if you still have the kid’s cards from Trivial Pursuit hanging around.

Look at your wedding albums and watch your video if you have one

Once or twice a year it’s nice to revisit your wedding day and remember how it all began. It’s always fun to see friends as they looked on that day and see yourself and your friends all smiling and celebrating and enjoying your special day.
