2014’s Most Popular Baby Names In Ontario

Service Ontario releases the most popular baby names for 2014

We don’t want to call it a rut, but it seems like Ontario is stuck in a bit of a pattern when it comes to baby names. For three years in a row, Olivia and Liam have come out on top as the most popular names for boys and girls born in Ontario.

So what are the top five names for babies born in Ontario in 2014?

GIRLS

Olivia

First popularized by Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, the name means “olive tree” and represents peace and fertility. The name has been a popular stand-by for the last fifteen years.

Emma

Of German origins, Emma means “universal” and has always been a popular name with so many Emma heroines in fiction, film and television. The name had a huge boost back in 2002 when Rachel and Ross from Friends named their daughter Emma.

Sophia

Impart the gift of knowledge to your daughter with this girls name meaning “wisdom”. The name has a sensuous sound and a delicate beauty to it.

Ava

The name received a boost in popularity when celebs like Reese Witherspoon chose Ava for their daughters. It means “life” and according to Nameberry, Ava is poised to take the #1 spot from Olivia.

Charlotte

This classic name is elegant and has royal lineage too. The wife of England’s King George III was named Queen Charlotte Sophia (a two-for-one deal!). We love shorting it to Charlie for a fun unisex nickname.

BOYS

Liam

The Irish short form for William has been a name in its own right for a very long time. It means “resolute protection” and really is a strong (and popular) boy’s name.

Ethan

A classic yet contemporary name, Ethan means “strong, firm”. The name has a way of being both fun and serious, sensitive and strong all at the same time.

Lucas

Lucas has become a bit of an international sensation—the name is #1 in Sweden and #4 in the Netherlands. And it comes complete with its own great nickname, Luke.

Noah

A name with biblical ties, Noah is a classic name meaning “rest; wandering”. Here at BabyPost HQ it is own of our favourites—not one of us can think of a Noah we met and didn’t love!

Benjamin

Another biblical name, Benjamin means “son of the right hand”. A very golden boy name, we love Ben as a quick and easy nickname
