Baby Names That Defy Nicknames

Want a name that will stick and avoid annoying nicknames? This is the list for you

A lot of thought goes into naming you baby. You agonize over the options and then boom! As soon as your kids enters school Michael becomes Mike (or Mick or Mikey), Andrea becomes Anne and the name you agonized over disappears.

Maybe you’ve factored nicknames into your choice, but if you would just rather avoid the possibility of an unwanted nickname surfacing, these short and sweet names are perfect for you.

I mean really, just try to shorten it: Br, Ee… it can’t be done. With Irish roots, Bree means “strength or exalted one” so not only will you avoid a short form you’d be giving your daughter a powerful name to boot.

If you’re looking for a popular but not too popular name, Cole is the name for you. It has been holding steady since the 90s and sits just outside the Top 100 most popular baby names. Even though it is nice and short, the name still has a lot of depth to it.

We can thank Ms. Witherspoon for the overwhelming popularity of this single syllable stunner. The name is Welsh in origin and means “ardor”—not a bad characteristic to imbue your baby-to-be with. Bonus: a tweak of the spelling (Rhys) makes it a great boys’ name as well.

A huge celebrity favourite—Mayim Bialik, Joan Cusack and Lionel Ritchie just to name a few—Miles has roots in every form of culture imaginable. Whether you love jazz, literature, film or television, you’ll be able to find someone with the poised name.

Currently seeing a rise in popularity, Ruby is vibrant name with a vintage feel. Right now, Ruby is the top name in Australia and #7 in England. And who doesn’t love the sparkly, intense imagery one associates with the beautiful red gem?

A name with Biblical ties, Eli means “ascended, uplifted, high”. The name is energetic and if it used on its own (instead of starting with Elijah, Elias or Elliott) it makes a great name that cannot be further shortened.

An ancient Irish queen, Maeve means “she who intoxicates”. This name is full of character and really, what little girl doesn’t want to be names after a queen? (A queen of fairies, for that matter.)

Meaning “red-haired”, we see no reason why your blond or brunette baby boy can’t embody this oh-so musical name. The name is typically seen as a surname, but we love it as a short and sweet first name.

Thank you Bey and Jay for giving Ivy a bit of a name renaissance. The origin of the name comes from, you guessed it, the name of the plant. In ancient Greece, Ivy represented fidelity and the flower itself symbolizes faithfulness.

Any Pretty Little Liar fans out there? If so, you’re probably already sold on this name. But for the rest of the world, Ezra is another Biblical name that has recently been growing in popularity (thanks, Mr. Fitz). It’s a quirky name but still has traditional roots making it the best of both worlds.
