Baby Names Inspired By Our Favourite HBO Shows

We take a look at some of our favourite baby names inspired by some of our favourite TV shows

HBO has been ruling the airways ever since The Sopranos aired in 1999. Last year Khaleesi sky rocketed to the top of the baby trends list thanks to the popularity of the HBO hit Game of Thrones. And while many might shy away from such a blatant nod towards your favourite show, some of these other names might just be the subtle reference you’re looking for.

A somewhat old-fashioned name, Martin is experiencing a revival at the moment. Ranked in the mid-200s, the name is seeing an increase in popularity for the first time since 1969. Martin made it onto our list in honour of Martin “Marty” Hart from the first season of True Detective. Although we aren’t huge fans of Marty as a nickname, we did love the show!

A slightly more interesting take on the standard Brianna or Breanna—a name that currently sits at #71 in North America—Brienne is a great way to reference Game of Thrones without being too in-your-face. Brienne of Tarth is a strong female character in the book and the show and she is loyal, romantic and a just the right amount of stubborn.

Meaning “dominant ruler”, Richard may be the most ironic possible choice for the lead character in HBO’s Silicon Valley. A genius, most definitely. A strong leader, not so much. The name has been consistently popular over the years, while some of its possible nicknames have fallen by the wayside (Dick, Richie, Ricky)—although we think Rich is a great option!

The millennial hit Girls has brought renewed attention to the short form of the Hebrew name Marnina. The name means rejoice and while sometimes Marnie’s character makes us do the exact opposite, it’s hard to not love the retro-inspired name.

While he might not be the brightest tool in the shed, we think Jason is a much less obvious, much more endearing name than say Bill or Sookie, if you’re looking to show the world you’re a True Bloodfan. The Greek name means “to heal” and was the #3 name for ALL of the 1970s. Today, the name still sits just outside the top 75.

Okay, so this one is a pretty obvious nod to Sex in the City, but really which of the four icon names wouldn’t be? The name is elegant and completely classic making it a great choice in and of itself. But we love the idea of shortening it to Charlie for a girl—and that’s where the subtlety comes into play!

A classic name from an HBO classic—Nate was the main character in the network’s 5 season stunner Six Feet Under. The show was a dark drama that focused on the Fisher family and their undertaking business. Nate is short form of Nathan or Nathaniel but has enough strength to hold its own.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus gives life to her role as the Vice President on Veep making her character’s name—Selina—a can’t miss on this list. The name means “moon goddess” and is a Latinized variation of the Greek name Selene.

As the often forgotten third son of Adam and Eve, Seth has some pretty serious Biblical ties. The name means “appointed, placed” and was widely used in the American old west. No surprise then, when the name surfaced as the lead character in the American western series Deadwood.

Another entry from the series that sparked more than one name trend, Arya means “noble” and is of Sanskrit origin. The name entered the popularity charts in 2010 and jumped 529 places in two years—it is one of the fastest-rising names all thanks to Game of Thrones and little Arya Stark.
