The Best Of Disney: Girls Baby Names

Baby names inspired by our ten favourite female Disney characters

We all have our favourite Disney movies and our favourite Disney characters too. We picked 10 of our favourites that we think make the perfect baby names for little girls. (Please, don’t be mad—we’ve left out Anna and Elsa. They seemed to be a forgone conclusion!)

Having a boy? Check out our picks for Disney-inspired boys' names.

Meg

While her full name is Megara, Hercules’s love interest is better known as Meg. From the 1997 animated film Hercules, Meg is a free spirit who is not only quick witted, but is also independent. You may be more in favour of Meg as a short form for Megan—a Welsh name that means pearl. In the 90s, Megan was #10 on the most popular name list.

Aurora

From the 1959 Disney classic, Sleeping Beauty, Aurora is a princess who falls into a deep slumber. From Latin origins, Aurora means “dawn”. In fact, she is actually the mythical goddess of the dawn, whose tears were said to turn into the morning dew. This name is growing in popularity (at #145 in 2013).

Belle

Meaning beautiful, Belle is the perfect name for any little girl. But Belle from the 1991 classic Beauty and the Beast was so much more than a pretty face. She was independent, intelligent and well read—a very well rounded young lady, who could sing to boot!

Merida

Feisty, independent and athletic Brave’s Merida is just that. While Merida is a medieval Scottish girl in the film, her name actually comes from Latin origins, meaning “one who has achieved a high place of honor” and is also a Spanish place name.

Willow

Most people probably don’t remember there ever being a character named Willow in the 1995 film Pocahontas, she was actually Pocahontas’s wise advisor, Grandmother Willow, a weeping willow tree. And if the name needed any more “cool” cred, just look at “Whip My Hair” singer Willow Smith!

Audrey

Kind of the complete opposite of a Disney princess, Audrey from the 2001 film Atlantis was a tomboy through and through. The name comes from English origins and means “noble strength”. It is a celeb favourite and has spent the last four years in the top 50 (#32 in 2013).

Celia

A kind, snake-haired monster in Monsters, Inc., Celia Mae is as dichotomous as most of the characters in the 2001 film. The name means “heavenly” and is said to originated from Shakespeare’s play As You Like It.

Daisy

An original in every sense, Daisy Duck was one of Walt Disney’s cartoon characters. The name itself is seeing a resurgence with the trend of vintage baby names. The perfect name for anyone who loves the natural beauty of the daisy!

Jasmine

As in Princess Jasmine, from the 1992 film Aladdin—it comes from the delicate and aromatic Persian flower of the same name. The name has been steadily climbing in popularity and now sits at #103.

Olivia

The Scottish mouse from 1986’s The Great Mouse Detective, Olivia is a very brave and adorable little girl. The name is currently #3 on the most popular list. It has Shakespearean ties and is related to the ancient Greece symbol of peace and fertility. A great alternative is Olive, which has also been gaining popularity since actress Drew Barrymore chose the name for her daughter.
