Bilingual Babies: Names That Work In English And French

Perfect for Canadian families, we love these beautiful bilingual baby names

When it comes to naming your baby, it can be difficult to find a name that you love. But what if you wanted to find a name that worked well in both French and English? It can be difficult. Maybe you love the Owen, but aren’t a fan how it sounds with a French accent.

We’ve rounded up our favourite bilingual baby names for boys and girls to help you make the search a little bit easier.

Éléanore / Eleanor

This classic yet beautiful name is of French origins but also works well in its English form. The name was brought over to England in the 12th century by Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine; the meaning of the name is unknown. The adorable nickname Ellie lends itself well to this very stately name.

Théo / Theo

The diminutive of Theodore (meaning “gift of God”) takes away a lot of the grandfatherly connotations of the name. Theo is short and chic and very contemporary. Theo is currently one of the more popular names in North America as well as in Europe.

Gisèle / Gisele

Supermodel Gisele may be Brazilian, but the name is perfect for a bilingual baby girl. The name is incredibly graceful, almost reminiscent of a ballerina.

Sebástian / Sebastian

A name that has recently entered the Top 40, Sebastian is a “classic-yet-unconventional” choice for parents looking for a bilingual name with a substantial history. We also can’t get enough of the nickname Seb, perfect in both French and English.

Amélie / Amelie

All it took was one French film to put Amelie on the baby name map. The name is of French origin and is closely related to the English favourite Emily.

Davide / David

A classic name if there ever was one, David means “beloved” and can be found at #14 on the most popular baby names list. A serious name with biblical roots, there are hundreds of famous Davids, royal Davids and literary Davids, too.

Eloïse / Eloise

This name actually comes from German origin, if you can believe it. While Eloise means “healthy; wide” the name itself is quite dainty and beautiful. The name has seen a resurgence in popularity since 2009—along with many other names beginning with the newly chic El-.

André / Andre

This variation of Andrew is a great choice for a name that sounds just as wonderful in English as it does in French. Meaning “man” Andre is a strong man that has a delicate sound as well.

Ève / Eve

Literally the oldest name in the book, Eve means “life”. The name brings to mind thoughts of purity, simplicity and ever-enduring strength. The single syllable of the name gives it a streamlined style we can’t help but love.

Cédric / Cedric

This name of Celtic origins, won our hearts over through the brave and self-sacrificing character of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter. The name means “bounty” and has a very noble air to it (not surprisingly, as the name was invented by Sir Walter Scott for the character of the hero’s father in Ivanhoe).
