Emma And Liam Top 2015’s Canadian Baby Names List

Baby Center Canada releases their list of the top baby names of 2015

It’s the end of December, so you know what that means. We’re revisiting the past year and compiling our “Top 10 of 2015” lists for pretty much everything.

And so, here we are, looking back on what Canadians named their babies this past year.

This year, Baby Centre Canada is leading the charge with their top ten lists for boys and girls. Ann Elizabeth Samson, the editor of baby Center Canada, spoke with CBC Radio about the importance of picking the perfect baby name.

"Choosing a name is maybe one of the most fun, but sometimes stressful parts, of having a new baby," Samson said. She made note of the many factors that influence parents including their family history, pop culture and cultural heritage, just to name a few.

The top ten girls’ names for 2015

  1.  Emma
  2. Olivia
  3. Sophia
  4. Zoe
  5. Emily
  6. Avery
  7. Isabella
  8. Charlotte
  9. Lily
  10. Ava

The top three names haven’t changed from last year, but below that there seems to be plenty of change.

Samson notes that quite a few new names jumped into the top 100 list this year including Taylor—not surprising since 2015 was the year of Taylor Swift. Maybe in 2030 Taylor will be able to welcomes all her 2015 Taylors to the stage!

Other girls’ names that entered the top 100 include Nova, Keira and Abby, while Molly, Aubrey and Harper moved down the list (we thinking Stephen Harper might have something to do with that last one).

It was a no brainer that Charlotte—the name of Prince William and Kate Middleton daughter—reached the top 10 this year. Even George, the first royal baby, climbed a whopping 109 spots to become the 90th most popular name on Baby Center’s boys’ names list.

Sadly, some people didn’t stop at George and Charlotte and took the royal baby name craze to another level. So you may be saying hello to a few Princeton, Noble, Legend and Legions in the next few years.

The top ten boys’ names for 2015

  1. Liam
  2. Jackson
  3. Logan
  4. Lucas
  5. Noah
  6. Ethan
  7. Jack
  8. William
  9. Jacob
  10. James

So what boys’ names were making the fast climb up the list? Wesley and Charles were the front runners while Ryder, Ryker, Peter and Arthur also moved onto the top 100 list. Samuel, Xavier and Blake had the biggest drop, but still remain in the top 100.

As for the trends we can look forward to in 2016, Samson has a few ideas.

"I think we'll see a rise in the names of our grandparents," Samson said. The trend is already started with names like Arthur, Angus, Mabel, Hazel on the rise. We are big fans of this trend (personal favourites include Hazel, Frankie and Martin).

Samson also doesn’t see an end to the over the top celebrity baby names or some parents decisions to use these names. But Samson doesn’t consider this copying, more like we as a society are getting used to new names like Apple, North and even Saint.

And the final trend on the rise: gender-neutral names and boys names used for girls (think James, Oakley and Frankie).
