The Latest Baby Name Craze Sweeping North America

You know a baby name has hit it big when Hollywood parents are just as obsessed as we are

There have been a lot of names that have suddenly popped up on our radars thanks to famous parents. I mean, who thought of James as the perfect name for a baby girl before Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds? Or Wyatt (thanks Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher).

The latest unconventional girl’s name to join the list is Sailor or alternatively Saylor. It might have started with model Christie Brinkley back in 1998, but thanks to Kristin Cavallari and her husband Jay Cutler, the name is seeing a resurgence.

The couple, who welcomed their third child and first daughter, on November 23rd, named their baby girl Saylor. And it seems that inspiration can come from anywhere, really. Cavallari explained the very strange story behind how she and Cutler chose their little girl’s name.

"We picked out this baby girl's name when I was pregnant with our first. I met a woman and her dog, and I loved her dog's name. Funny enough, it was the name she had picked out if she had a girl, but she had boys, so instead she used it for her dog instead," Cavallari said back in September.

But one celebrity does not a baby name craze make.

Enter Bristol Palin. The Dancing With The Stars alum announced just hours after Cavallari’s announcement that she too would be naming her baby girl Sailor. Palin is due in December and wrote on Instagram, “When you find out Kristin Cavallari named her baby the exact name you are naming yours what a weird coincidence."

Palin included a photo or her monogramed baby blanket, most likely to prove she wasn’t jumping on The Hills star bandwagon.

And while Cavallari and Palin are leading the charge in the revival of the name for girls, Liv Tyler started the charge back in February when she named her son Sailor Gene Gardner.

Since then, the name has been gaining popularity. On Nameberry.com, the name has seen a 199% increase over last week for girls and 183% increase for boys. Sailor is an occupational name, with a very obvious meaning.

Most people prefer the classic Sailor over the trendier Saylor, but thanks to Cavallari, that may be changing soon.

What do you think about Sailor for a baby’s name?
