The Most Unusual Celebrity Baby Names Of 2014

Taking a look back at some of the out-of-the-box names celebrities gave their children in 2014

We’ve already covered some of our favourite celebrity baby names of 2014, so now it’s time to turn to some of the most… unusual. We all know that you can’t really judge a name from the outside; names have cultural, familial, and personal significance that often do not register to the outside world. But that doesn't mean that some of these choices didn’t raise a few eyebrows.

Personally, I think the most interesting thing about celebrities’ naming choices is that—like the choices of us mere mortals—they adhere to certain trends or common patterns. There are a few outlying exceptions, of course—nobody named their baby anything like Diplo’s son, Lazer Lee Louis—but for the most part, the most eyebrow-raising celeb baby names of 2014 can be divided into four distinct categories. Here they are, without further ado, the wackiest celebrity-chosen baby names of 2014.

The high expectations

These stars gave their kids some seriously grandiose titles to live up to. Might as well set standards high while they’re young and give them something they can aspire to!

Titan Jewell – Kelly Rowland’s son

Cash Van  – Dave Haywood’s son

Saint Laszlo – Pete Wentz’s son

Royal Reign – L'il Kim's daughter

The creative spellings and mash-ups

Regardless of what US Weekly would like us to believe, celebrities aren’t just like us. So it will come as no surprise that some celebs looked for unique spellings of common names or went for creative portmanteaus (why settle for one name when it’s two you want!).

Avri Roel – Robert Downey Jr.’s daughter

“Avri" is pronounced like Avery, and "Roel" is a portmanteau of the first two letters of both parents’ names

Elizabella – Alyssa Milano’s daughter

Pemma Mae – actor David Krumholtz's daughter

Pema is actually a common name that means “lotus.” Adding the unconventional extra ‘m’ has the effect of distinguishing Pemma Mae from other Pemas and making this name a twist on the ubiquitous Emma.

The earthy-hippy

These blissed-out flower children gave their kids unique names inspired by nature and music. Groovy, man.

River Rose –  Kelly Clarkson's daughter

Summer Rain – Christina Aguilera's daughter

Lyric Sonny Roads – actress Soleil Moon Frye's son

Vale Guthrie – journalist Savannah Guthrie's daughter

Briar Rose – Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen’s daughter

The out-of-this-world monikers

A distant cousin of the hippy name, these celebrities looked far out – to the skies and their real and mythological travellers – for their naming inspiration.

Mars Ilah – comedian Blake Anderson's daughter

Zephyr Emerson – Napster co-creator Sean Parker’s son

Apollo Bowie Flynn – Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale's son

Buzz Michealangelo – Tom Fletcher's son

This last one hits in so many categories – it’s inspired by art, and it’s a pretty high bar to set to name your child after both a great astronaut and a great painter – but we thought the doubly-spacey associations of the first name (Buzz Armstrong, Buzz Lightyear) kept it firmly in this category.

With a number of stars already announcing that they are expecting in 2015, here's hoping that this coming year has even more interesting celebrity baby names to discuss and debate.
