IVF To Become More Affordable In The Near Future

A new procedure is set to make IVF available to more couples around the world

Every new study into IVF procedures seems to be touted as “revolutionary” and this newest study is no different. Researchers in Belgium asked the question, “is there an affordable treatment for couples seeking an alternative route to conception?” and set out to make it a reality.

IVF has resulted in the birth of over 5 million babies across the world. But up until now, the costs associated with the pricey procedure have kept many couples from taking advantage of the benefits of this medical breakthrough.

In Canada, the procedure costs between $4,000-$8,000 and the medications will add another $2,000-$7,000 to the bill. The shocker? That is only for one cycle and most women need at least two cycles before the procedure is successful. With a price tag of up to $15,000 per cycle, IVF is cost restrictive and leaves many would-be parents behind.

Now, a new procedure that uses an IVF culture system instead of the traditional incubator system may help to cut the costs associated with IVF. During a study conducted by American and Belgian researchers, sixteen babies were born using the new system.

With success rates that match those currently reported by IVF clinics, the culture system could be used to replace the more expensive and cost-restrictive incubator systems. If the study’s results can be replicated in fertility clinics, people all over the world will have access to a procedure that might not have previously been available to them. And an affordable alternative for those having difficulty conceiving may become a reality.
