Odd Conception Old Wives Tales

A few crazy, out there ideas about how to conceive a baby

We’ve all heard those stories from our crazy and incredibly old great, great grandmothers. They think they know everything from conception to birth because of the cycles of the moon and their long life experience. A lot of them are a bit out there, maybe even borderline ridiculous. So if you’re having trouble conceiving and want to lighten the mood, check out this list and maybe even try a few.

Have sex during a full moon

To conceive you have to have intercourse when you’re ovulating. But in ancient times, many women used the moon to follow their menstrual cycle. They believed that if you had intercourse during a full moon, you would conceive. While your cycle might not be synched to the full moon, just think of the romance factor the full moon could provide!

Drink grapefruit juice

First off, do not drink more grapefruit juice. It may be delicious, but doesn’t (as people claim) increase the effectiveness of your cervical mucus. In fact, too much grapefruit juice while taking fertility medication can be dangerous. So be cautious with this conception myth.

Use missionary position only

People commonly think that, because of gravity, if the man is on top the sperm will stay inside the woman’s body. But, in terms of conception, position really doesn’t matter.

Hold your legs up after sex

Same idea. The woman can use gravity to jostle the sperm into her uterus and get herself inseminated. This is definitely a myth, but if you want to give your partner a laugh... go for it!

Take cough syrup

Now this one might actually work. Cough syrup thins the mucus in your lungs, so you can cough it out. But it also works on mucus everywhere in the body, including the cervix. Fertility experts may suggest taking 2 tablespoons of syrup three times a day during ovulation.

Sit in a pregnant woman’s chair

Because pregnancy is contagious. Obviously.

And of course, there are also ideas of how to tell if you are having a boy or a girl. If you ask us, an ultrasound is your best bet but feel free to try these at-home tricks.

Odd for boys, even for girls

This one’s been around for a long time. People think that if you have intercourse on an odd number of the month, you’ll conceive a boy. For a girl, try the even number.

Pee in a cup and mix it with Draino

Not sure how long Draino has been around, but this is one crazy wives tale. If your urine turns green you’re having a girl, if it turns blue you’re having a boy. Maybe it depends on the colour of the Draino though?

Key test

Hand the pregnant woman a key. If she picks it up by the narrow part, she’s having a girl; if she picks it up from the wider end, it’s a boy.

Stealing your beauty

Clearly girls want to steal their mother’s beauty, so if your pregnant complexion’s not looking so clear, it’s a girl. If your skin is glowing, you’re carrying a boy.

Ring trick

Pop a ring on a string and hang it over the pregnant belly. If it starts to spin in circles, you’re having a boy. If it swings back and forth in a straight line, it’s a girl. Just make sure there isn’t a draft in the room.
