How Much Baby Gear Do I Need To Pre-Purchase?

One mommy-to-be ponders how much stuff she really needs before her big arrival

I am into the home stretch of my first pregnancy and I can’t wait to meet my little bundle of joy. Although pregnancy has not been an entirely joyous experience, I can honestly say that I will miss feeling my baby kick inside of me, watching my tummy grow and the excitement that comes with every new week of being pregnant. I don’t know what type of parent I will be but I know that I am ready to embark on this new chapter of life with my growing family.

And so, I continue to prepare. I have been nesting, as they say, folding freshly washed baby clothes, hanging pictures in the nursery and making sure that I have all the baby gear I will need. This is harder to manage than it sounds.

According to some very convincing marketers, there is a lot of stuff that I need to raise a baby and have ready for when he comes home. Some days I panic and think, “I HAVE to get these wipe warmers immediately or I’m a bad Mom!” but most days I tell myself that women have been raising babies for thousands of years with much less and I will be just fine.

There are, however, a few things that I’ve decided are must haves pre-baby. Here are the four items that I have ready to go:

Car Seat

This is a legal and safety requirement for anyone planning on taking a baby in a vehicle…something I am planning to do. One cannot leave the hospital without a properly installed, legally approved car seat. Needless to say, we have one. When it comes to choosing the perfect car seat for you and your baby, check out our baby gear section.

A Place To Sleep

Although I anticipate just staring at my boy for the first few days as he naps on my chest, we wanted a designated sleeping area for our son. We decided on a Moses basket used by my sister, my brother, my sister’s children, and me.  It was reupholstered by my mother and has a beautiful stand that will be placed beside our bed. Not only does this basket hold sentimental value, it provides a place for our little man to sleep when he takes those initial naps that aren’t in my arms.  For us, a must-have.

Some people say that you shouldn’t buy diapers before the baby is born but I disagree. We can’t anticipate how many diapers he will go through, or what size he will need when, but we can prepare for those first few days of baby poop. We bought a pack of newborn diapers and have a few packs of size ones on hand. We also have unopened wipes on hand in anticipation of cleaning a dirty bum. Read more about which diapers are right for you and your baby on our site.

Receiving Blankets

To swaddle, clean spit up and provide warmth (among many other uses), receiving blankets will provide more than coverage for our baby in those initial days at home. Having a few of these multi-use items on hand will help us with a host of issues that will undoubtedly arise.

Provided I don’t run into any breastfeeding issues, this small list should cover everything we will need for our son in his first days at home.  We will provide him with food, shelter and clothing and most importantly, lots and lots of love. Surely that is the most important thing we can give him. Anything else, we can purchase as we go.

Now, we wait patiently for his arrival.

As always, (and despite contrary belief), I am not always right. Other mothers may disagree with me and say that I have missed something crucial or added an unnecessary item. They may be right. Bringing up baby is such a personal experience and the gear my little man hates may be music to your baby’s ears.

Happy nesting!
