Pregnancy Has An Odour That Can Reveal Baby's Gender

A new study suggests you can actually smell the gender of an unborn baby

So according to this thing called science, pregnancy has a natural odour. New research suggests that some, and maybe all, female primates release a natural “pregnancy perfume” that males can probably detect.

The scienfitic community has always suspected that it's possible for males to smell pregnancy. But, it gets more interesting. The scent women produce during pregnancy is thought to broadcast whether the child is a boy or a girl. It is the first real evidence of this concept that an expecting mother's scent differs, depending on the sex of the baby.

The study was published in the journal Biology Letters and was conducted using lemurs.

Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and Duke University collected scent secretions from 12 female lemurs, both before and during pregnancy.

Then, they used chemical analysis to identify the hundreds of different chemcials that make up each female’s scent and the way it changed during pregnancy. Researchers say that expecting lemur moms give off simpler scents "that contain fewer odor compounds compared with their pre-pregnancy bouquet. The change is more pronounced when the moms are carrying boy."

The study also found the hormone profiles between pregnant lemurs carrying sons and those carrying daughters to be significantly different.

So why does this happen? Since humans and lemurs are both classified as one of the more sexually promiscuous species, it could to help sort out paternity questions. Males can sense whether or not they fathered the baby.

As for pregnancy perfume based on fetal gender, “It could be that producing these compounds uses resources that are directed elsewhere when they’re pregnant, especially if it’s more energetically costly for a female to have a male pregnancy than a female pregnancy."
