Toronto Neighbourhood With Highest Birth Rate Gets New Pregnancy Clinic

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne opens a new, much-needed pregnancy clinic in Toronto's Thorncliffe area

The province of Ontario is opening a new pregnancy clinic in Thorncliffe Park on Monday, March 2nd 2015.

The neighbourhood is located between Leaside and the Don Valley. It has the highest birth rate and highest proportion of children under age 14 in Toronto.

Despite this, the Thorncliffe community says access to health care is one of their most pressing needs.

Premier Kathleen Wynne said in a statement, “The Thorncliffe Park pregnancy clinic will help women in the community get the support they need before, during, and after their pregnancies.”

The clinic is a community-driven collaboration among family doctors, midwives, obstetricians and the local neighbourhood office. It includes a waiting room and two examining rooms. They accept walk-ins.

It can provide care for up to 150 mothers and babies during pregnancy and for six weeks after birth.

It is located on Leaside Park Dr., next to the Midwives Clinic of East York.

Carmine Stumpo, vice-president of programs for Toronto East General Hospital says the clinc operates on a very “unique model where residents have access to primary care, midwifery, advanced-practice nursing and obstetrics — all in the community.”

The clinic has an annual operating budget of about $100,000. That money will cover salaries for a part-time nurse and a part-time community intake worker.
