Everything You Need For A Perfect Day At The Beach With Baby

We've got all the essentials you'll need for heading to the beach with your little one this summer

Whether you’re heading to your local beach or planning on visiting the sandy shores while on vacation, deciding what to bring for your little one can be overwhelming. Before you pack every baby item you own, keep in mind that being in a new environment won’t require much to keep your babe entertained—there are so many new sights and sounds to explore!

If your little one is under six months, you’ll want to be prepared to keep him out of the sun, as he is too young for sunscreen. Sunscreen can be used on tots 6 months and older, but it is still important to keep young ones in the shade due to their extremely sensitive skin. With these factors taken into account, you can plan a safe and fun outing with your child.

To help you out with the rest of your packing list, check out some of our favourite items we like to have on hand when spending the day (or week) at the beach with baby.

A fun sun hat, like this green and blue fish print from Patagonia, will have your babe’s face and neck shielded from the sun. We like that this one offers an Ultraviolet Protection Factor of 50+, meaning that no more than 2% of the sun’s UV rays penetrate the material.

Patagonia Baby Little Sol Hat, $39

A few sand toys, like a pail and shovel, can offer endless hours of fun. We love this set that includes the basics as well as other goodies like a mini truck and a spinning pinwheel to keep baby entertained at the beach (whether or not he can actually use the toys properly).

B. Ready Beach Bag, $30

A foldable tent provides relief from the heat for your little one, whether she wants to sleep or play inside. This cheerful pod is equipped with a sleeping pad, enclosed by a mesh screen and weighs a mere 2.5 pounds—perfect for travel!

KidCo PeaPod, $90

A pair of water shoes will let your little one walk on the hot sand with ease as well as protect those little feet from rocks and other sharp objects. With a quick-drying material, elastic straps and a textured outsole, these are a great choice for an active tot.

Baby Boys Aquaglove Water Shoe and Baby Girls Aquaglove Water Shoe, $12 a pair

There’s more than what meets the eye to this colourful messenger bag. It easily unfolds into a water-resistant blanket and comes with a detachable cooler bag for storing refreshments. If the blanket’s surface gets sandy or dirty, simply wipe it clean.

Skip Hop Central Park Outdoor Blanket & Cooler Bag, $60

This baby wrap allows you to take your babe (up to 30 pounds) into the ocean or for walks along the beach while still having the use of both hands. The polyester jersey mesh is great for wearing in the water thanks to its quick-drying nature and the fact that the material doesn’t feel heavy when wet.

Beachfront Baby Wrap Carrier, $50
