Disney Under Fire For 'Racist' Moana Costume

And so the inappropriate Halloween outfits begin...

Call it blissful ignorance, call it an innocent mistake, or go ahead and label it a catastrophic blunder—whatever way you look at it, Disney are having a not-very-good start to the week.

The film company released their latest Halloween costume, based on the character Maui from the upcoming new Disney movie, Moana—a tale about an adventurous teenager who meets Polynesian legendary demigod on her journey to a fabled island.

Sure, it's only natural that kids would want to dress up as their favourite Disney character this October 31. But what's got everyone's tail in a spin is the full-body, brown-skin costume that many are claiming, appropriates Polynesian culture.

Some claimed that the zip-up suit with "all over Maui tattoo screen art" was offensive to Pacific Island and Samoan culture, and others were simply in disbelief that Disney was making 'brownskin' a costume.

On the flip side, others on Twitter bemoaned the oversensitivity of people, regarding it as a character representation and not a slight on their culture.

And there was us thinking that Donald Trump was going to be the most offensive Halloween costume this year...
