10 Classic Christmas Films Kids Will Love

We've rounded up our ten favourite classic Christmas movies to watch this season with your family

There is something to be said about the classics. And that is certainly true for Christmas movies. This holiday season, mix in a few of your childhood favourites with the modern holiday movies they are begging you for (we've lost count of how many times we've seen Frozen this year).

Rudolph, the Red-Nose Reindeer
This claymation classic probably harkens back to Christmases of your kids’ grandparents’ childhoods, but it is a perennial favourite, thanks to its charming, quirky story and adorable, oddball cast of characters. Rudolph may take centre stage, but I don’t know anyone of any age who hasn't had their heartstrings tugged by the island of misfit toys.

The Snowman
This magical, beautifully-animated wordless film based on the Raymond Briggs book of the same name follow the magical Christmas Eve adventures of a little boy and the snowman who comes to life. Visually stunning and with a wonderful score, this is the perfect Christmas film for toddlers.

Home Alone
This is the perfect Christmas flick for older kids who will be tickled pink by the pratfalls and pranks of the precocious Kevin McCallister. It indulges in some ultimate kid fantasies (sundaes for dinner! unlimited bed-jumping!), but reinforces that Christmas isn’t Christmas without your family.

Miracle on 34th Street
The 90’s remake is great, but the black-and-white original is the true family classic (and watching it will help prepare your kids for grown-up black-and-white classics like Holiday Inn and It’s A Wonderful Life). In this heartwarming story, Santa is put on trial and it’s up to a little girl and a New York City lawyer to save him, and by extension, the magic of Christmas.

A Christmas Story
The film itself may be thirty years old and set seventy years in the past, but all kids can relate to the Ralphie’s desire for that one perfect Christmas gift. Like Home Alone, this is a good Christmas film for older kids.

Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town
Like Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, this is a 60’s Claymation classic that stands the test of time. Superhero-syle origin stories are becoming increasingly popular, so kids are sure to be fascinated by this yuletide tale of how a young man named Kris Kringle became jolly toy-giver we know and love.

Frosty the Snow Man
This animated film takes the classic Christmas carol and transforms it into a fun, sweet easy-to-follow story about friendship and greed that is a perfect fit for little kids.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
The original 60’s animation short is by far the best adaptation of this Christmas Seuss story. No offence to Mr. Carrey – he may make a fine Ebenezer Scrooge, but he just can’t compete with Boris Karloff as the Grinch. Karloff’s excellent narration combined with the film’s catchy songs, charming, lively animation, and genuinely inspiring and still relevant anti-materialist message, make this a bonafide classic.

Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown
Combining classic Peanuts hijinks with a sweet, sincere story about the true meaning of Christmas, this is the perfect family film: it appeals to both excited kids and their sometimes-overwhelmed and weary parents. Be sure to watch this after you’ve picked out your Christmas tree, though, or your kids might insist on giving “a little love” to the scrawniest one on the lot!

The Muppets’ Christmas Carol
It’s whimsical, charming, heart-wrenching, quotable, genuinely funny, has great songs, and is a surprisingly accurate adaptation of Dickens – what more could you ask for? The Muppet’s Christmas Carol is the ultimate Christmas classic for kids of all ages (and that means parents, too!)
