The Best Baby Halloween Costumes for 2014

Hop on the pop culture band wagon and get your little one dressed in a Halloween costume perfect for 2014

Last year it was Miley's Wrecking Ball and the fox from What The Fox Says. Every year there are a few key costumes that really resonate with the pop culture moments of the year. Here are five of our top picks for this year's pop culture costumes and how to DIY them for your little one!

Rosie the Riveter

Emma Watson is standing up in the UN for it, Taylor Swift finally “came out” about it, and Beyonce made the biggest visual statement of the year about it. Let’s be real: feminism is having a major moment. So why not celebrate the increasing popularity of the f-word with a baby costume honouring an original feminist icons, Rosie the Riveter? It’s easy, unique, and hey, if it was good enough costume for Leslie Knope, it’s good enough for your baby!

What you’ll need:

  • a pair of jeans,
  • a blue button-down shirt
  • a yellow T-shirt
  • a red handkerchief

Technically Frozen came out in 2013, but the film was a sensation and parodies and references are still popping up almost 10 months later. Elsa and Anna might be the popular choice for older girls, but baby boys and girls alike will look adorable as quirky, chilly side-kick Olaf the snowman. You can buy this costume pre-packaged, but it’s also super-easy to DIY. All you really need is:

  • an Olaf hat (Etsy is a great option for this, or you can knit it yourself if you’re crafty)
  • a white short-sleeved bodysuit or white pants and a white t shirt

Captain America

Relations with our southern neighbour are not always easy, but if there’s one American Canadians can always get behind, it’s the Cap! Captain America and the Winter Soldier was huge this spring, and Captain America himself is a nice-guy hero for your little one to emulate. It also an easy costume, especially if you go with the vintage, comic book style look.

What you’ll need:

  • striped leggings
  • a blue star-print t shirt
  • red socks
  • a blue star-patterned cap

Peter Pan

You may not realize it yet, but the perennially youthful Peter Pan is coming back in a big way. He was featured heavily in Disney’s live-action TV show Once Upon A Time, and he’s about to come to life - played by Girls star Allison Williams - in a major televised musical adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s classic play. Peter Pan Live! is set to air in December and it will surely be as big a hit as last year’s adaptation of The Sound of Music. Get a jump on the trend by treating your little one up as Peter Pan this Halloween.

What you’ll need:

  • a onsie or top and bottom, in various shades of green
  • a green knitted cap
  • green pointy-toed socks or slippers

Baby Groot

Guardians of the Galaxy was hands-down the summer’s biggest smash hit; from Rocket the Raccoon to strongman Drax, everyone had a favourite character. But the character everyone was buzzing about was Groot, the superhero tree with the small vocabulary, big heart, and awesome dance moves. And what’s cuter than Groot? Baby Groot! So dress your little sprout up like everyone’s favourite Guardian this Halloween.

What you’ll need:

  • knitted brown onesie or top and bottom separates
  • knitted green leaf cap (again, Etsy is your friend or you can knit one yourself)
