Holiday 2014 Gift Guide: Expectant Moms

Wondering what to get for the mom-to-be in your life (or what to ask for)? Here are our suggestions for gifts that will please

Shopping for the expectant mom may seem daunting: do you get a gift for the baby, or for her? Should it be something pregnancy-related, or not? We sorted through these questions for you, to make your shopping and gift-giving more joyous and less stressful. Here are our picks for holiday gifts for the new mom-to-be.

A massage gift card can go a long way for a pregnant woman at any stage. Make sure the place you choose is equipped for prenatal massage. A massage is a great break, relaxing, and helpful to sore muscles from a changing body.

It doesn’t have to be fancy, but a new pair of earrings or necklace can brighten up a holiday and an outfit. Expectant moms are likely to be pickier about clothes, as they need to fit comfortably, but jewelry (rings aside) fits regardless of shape.

Body pillow

For various reasons, sleep tends to be an issue for a lot of pregnant ladies and new moms. A good body pillow will adapt through pregnancy and beyond. Gift the gift of restful sleep.

Tickets to an event

Take her out! Moms-to-be are inundated with pregnancy tips and questions and concerns all the time. Give her some her time with tickets to a concert, play or sporting event (depending on her tastes). Make sure you pick something seated, that doesn’t end too late.

While you may want to steer away from something that’s more for the baby than for her, there are a variety of keepsakes you might consider. A newborn hand and foot print kit is one idea. A belly casting kit is another. Another consideration is a gift card for a photo studio that does pregnancy and/or newborn and family portraits.

That thing pregnant women say, where they can’t see their feet? It’s often true. Which makes painting toenails impossible. Despite it not being sandal weather, the pampering of a professional pedicure is irresistible.

If you’re in the market for a more sizable gift, perhaps for a daughter or spouse, a good camera is a great idea (unless she already has one). Once the new arrival arrives, there promises to be many photo opps—and this gift will get her prepared in advance. (If you’re in the market for a smaller purchase, take this idea and turn it into photo frames, which will also come in handy once baby is born.)

If she’s nearer to the start of her pregnancy, and the journaling sort, a pregnancy journal is a special gift. If she’s closer to the end, you may consider a baby book or memory box instead.

We’re not suggesting you buy a box of chocolates, but if the expectant mom in your life has a sweet tooth—or doesn’t, but does now that she’s pregnant—you may consider a gift card to her favourite bakery or ice cream shop.

Pregnancy is exhausting. A homemade meal, or even delivery, will take one thing off of her to-do list, so she can get off of her aching feet.
