Holiday Style Guide for Busy Moms

How to dress up your basics for every holiday party

Holiday season is fast approaching and chances are invites to holiday parties are rolling in. While your wardrobe may be mostly comprised of your mom uniform, you don’t need a closet full of dresses to make an impression at every party.

We spoke to Erin from Better Styled Inc. about how a busy mom can update the basics in her wardrobe for every holiday function this December.

Sometimes, there are more party invites than clothes in the closet, how can you recycle certain items to look different for every party without breaking the budget?

I don’t believe in trends that are just for the holiday season. Women don’t buy clothes that they wear just for Christmas. You’ll get the most bang for your buck if it can transition through different seasons. I hope that everyone has a black dress, that’s a solid colour and great fitting or a sparkly tank top. You can dress them up with costume jewelry, like drop earrings, cocktail rings and bangles. Or layer a read satin or velvet jacket over your basics. Another option is to dress up dark denim jeans with a sparkly tank, or pair it with a winter white sweater. The easiest way to make the most of your basics is by adding holiday colours.

Moms often have tight schedules, running from work to picking the kids up from school to a holiday party. How can you switch from day to night in a hurry?

When you’re going from work to work functions it helps to plan ahead as much as possible. Everyone has big bags, so you can carry a few extra pieces with you to work. So if you’re wearing a black skirt to the office, you can carry a change of top in your bag. Or you can change your basic shoes to a bootie or a pair of over-the-knee boots. Or try switching up your stockings to a really cool textured tight, or one with a pattern.  Make sure you carry a small envelope clutch in your big bag, so when you go out at night, that’s all you need to take, don’t go to the party carrying your big bag.

Looking good for the holidays is important, but so is keeping up with the kids, when they are running around at Grandma’s house or a family-friendly holiday party. How can you put together an outfit that works for both?

For busy moms, leggings are the best bet. But you have to remember that leggings aren’t pants, so wear a tunic that covers your bum. Layer dressing is easy for moms, and it gives the flexibility to get down on the floor with their kids. Leather leggings are a big trend this year. And there are so many flat options to pair them with, try colours, textures, animal prints, two-tone, snake skin, spikes are a huge trend. Another option is a great jean, paired with a heel or a flat. Add a plain white blouse with a luxurious infinity scarf.

What pieces or trends do you recommend for new moms looking to hide their baby weight?

Ruching is God’s gift to women. You can hide and highlight the areas of your body that you want to. You want the ruching to highlight your thinnest part, and drape across your tummy. Women who aren’t feeling confident tend to dress in baggy clothing, but everything needs to be in proportion. So if you’re doing a wide bottom, wear something fitted on top. Top it with a cardigan or a boyfriend jacket if you still want to cover up. If you’re wearing a skinny jean, you can wear a looser top. Either way, make sure you avoid thin fabrics. Also, add accessories that drive the eyes up to the face and away from what you are trying to hide.

How can you dress up maternity clothes, without buying a whole new wardrobe expecting moms probably won’t wear again?

Likelihood is that you bought a wrap-dress, a wrap-dress is the perfect base for your outfit. Use long necklaces, cardigans and accessories. It’s the same as dressing up your basics.
