Tenth Moon Mothercare Is Changing The Way We Care For New Moms

We chatted with Lindsay Forsey, founder of the postnatal care package company, to find out how she's giving back to new mamas

Every mother knows the importance of having a strong support network in those first few weeks after giving birth.

As well as the world-altering entry to motherhood, we're also dealing with total exhaustion, a rollercoaster of emotions, and changes to our body that have left us feeling tender, delicate and extremely fragile. Maternal wellness may not seem like a huge deal, but the kindness and care we show to mothers can be so vitally important during this transformative time.

By combining the wisdom of midwives, doctors, doulas—and of course, mothers—one mom is changing the way we care for new mamas.

Lindsay Forsey founded Tenth Moon Mothercare—Canada's first postnatal care package company—back in 2014. Three years on, she works with Canadian companies to come up with mama-centric packages that are full of beautiful and organic products. Each package is full of personal care must-haves that are designed to ease the natural discomforts of childbirth and to soften the transition from pregnancy to motherhood.

Tenth Moon—which refers to the number of lunar cycles in a full-term pregnancy; most babies are born in the tenth moon—is on a mission to deliver as many packages as possible! We sat down with Lindsay to chat about birth, babies, and the magical powers of Witch Hazel!

How did the idea for Tenth Moon come about?

Lindsay Forsey: Tenth Moon is a pay it forward project that grew into a business. After I had my first child I didn’t have PPD and I didn’t struggle severely but it was a challenge in the first weeks. I had an emergency C-section and it was much more difficult than I’d ever expected, even with my experience as a doula. My husband and mom were my biggest supports. When I made it out of the foggy first few weeks I realized I couldn’t have got through it without them.

I started with a small care package; granola, herbal baths etc. I started making care packages for friends—then I started getting requests from friends: ‘I’m going to a baby shower. Would you make something?’ I started thinking about it as something special and an opportunity to grow a business. It was just before my second child, two and a half years later, when it became Tenth Moon.

Which Tenth Moon package is your favourite?

LF: The Kit + Caboodle. It doesn’t include a lot of the baby items, but I love the package because it’s focused on moms and wellbeing. It goes through a checklist of all the natural discomforts that a new mom experiences based on my own experience and talking to lots of other moms in groups, midwives, and doulas about what’s going on in the body: you’re hungry, your breasts are tender etc. It’s a complete package that includes healthy snacks and products to soothe sore nipples that you can use on the couch or wherever you set up your cozy space. There are personal care items you just have to have, like nursing pads and maternity pads, plus extra items that you didn’t know you needed. Witch hazel is great for healing the perineum and is gentle and easy to use!

How do you decide which products to use in Tenth Moon packages?

LF: There’s a lot going on in a woman’s body after she gives birth. You're exhausted and nursing around the clock. You're hungry and thirsty and hormones are running wild. You're tender and sore. Tenth Moon packages are created with these needs in mind—everything serves a purpose. There’s a balance of soothing items, like our herbal sitz bath, lavender mineral soak and lip balm; nutritious snacks, like granola with oats and pecans to promote healthy breast milk supply; and nitty-gritty stuff new moms just need, like maternity pads and nipple butter. The Mama + Baby package includes a few extra tidbits that Mom will feel good about using on her delicate little one, like organic diaper butter that you could eat (though, I don’t suggest it!) Using organic and natural ingredients and respecting the environment is important for me. We partner with a lot of amazing Canadian companies making products are that safe for moms and their babes.

Who typically buys the packages?

LF: I do get some moms who purchase for themselves—I’d love to encourage this more; “I’m not going to run around, I can get this for myself.” Typically, I have baby shower gift buyers or last minute purchases for someone just about to have their baby or who just had a baby last night. There are quite a few partners and husbands who buy for their wife. If you’re looking for points as a partner it’s an incredibly thoughtful gift and shows how much support you’re ready to give.

Why is Tenth Moon so important for moms?

LF: I say that Tenth Moon packages are about much more than just the tangible items in the box. Every mom is reminded that her wellness matters; it's not just about you having a baby, it’s about you becoming a mother. You can still have challenges with your third child. It’s easy to assume that she must have everything she needs, but a new mom is any mom who has ever had a baby.

What was the nicest thing anyone did for you after you gave birth?

LF: Bringing me food in bed was the best thing. I had an emergency C-section, and if it’s not planned, it can be very difficult to cope afterward. I had migraines and complications and my husband bought everything to me in bed and it was so nice to be cared for. My need for care was so much greater the first time.

What’s your secret for maintaining balance?

LF: I’m just winging it and taking each day as it comes. Tuesday and Fridays are my power days when my youngest goes to daycare and my oldest is at school. I make solid to-do lists and work through as much as I can. But suddenly one is home sick and the day changes and you need to be flexible or stay up late. My husband is not directly involved with the business but in terms of bouncing ideas around and having his support, he’s very supportive of my growing business and the commitments of being an entrepreneur. It's very busy but rewarding and Tenth Moon Mothercare has become part of who I am. Even my kids are involved! My older daughter has come with me to deliver packages, and they know that’s what I do—I take care of moms.
