The Perfect March Break Breakfast Ideas

A week of not having to rush in the mornings should mean a week of warm and creative breakfasts

Having kids at home for the week means less rush, but less rush doesn't mean you automatically have lots of ideas. If you have a chance to take some extra time to prepare and eat breakfasts with your kids this March break, here are some tasty ideas you might want to try.

Blueberry Pie Oatmeal

Have a pie lover in the family? No need to wait until dessert to get your fix. This blueberry pie-inspired breakfast is easy to have the ingredients for on-hand, as it's all dry and frozen items that won't go bad. Get the recipe at Apple of My Eye.

Apple Omlette with Cheddar and Thyme

This beautiful dish mixes sweet and savoury and will appeal to kids and adults alike. You may want to leave the honey out of the mix and sprinkle on top of the finished omlette instead, so people can opt in or out depending on their tastes. Find the recipe at What Should I Eat for Breakfast Today

Breakfast Taco Bar

Take this popular dinner idea to the breakfast table: pile a plate with corn tortillas and fillings of your choice for the kids to pick and assemble. Try scrambled eggs, black beans, diced tomatoes, guacamole, mild salsa, shredded cheddar and other favourites. Here's how it worked out for one mom over at Evolving Motherhood.

Mini Oatmeal Banana Cottage Cheese Pancakes

How many things that kids love can be packed into one recipe? Top with fresh fruit for added vitamins, or stir in some chocolate chips for a special treat. Get the recipe at My Little Gourmet.

Breakfast Yogurt Parfaits

A yogurt parfait for breakfast looks like a sweet treat but is packed with nutrients. Fruit, yogurt (try plain or greek) and granola are staples. Mix it up with honey or maple syrup, flax seeds and nuts. Here's one take at Iowa Girl Eats (this particular one is make-ahead).

Roasted Beet and Sweet Potato Hash

Slip some veggies into breakfast, and some colour. This dish works exceptionally well if you cook extra beets and sweet potatoes with dinner the night before. If your kids aren't into poached eggs, try fried—you can also use the hash as a base or more like homefries and serve eggs on the side. This recipe is particularly great for being hearty and filling, without being bready and bad for you. Take a look at Eating Rules.

Crustless Mini Quiche (Breakfast Muffins!)

These single-serving mini-quiches, or breakfast muffins, if you will, are great grab-and-go options if your kids are off to camps or plans. They're easy to make to taste by substituting varieties of cheese, meat and/or vegetables. Likewise, you can stick with or skip the heavy cream. It's hard to mess these up as long as everything is thoroughly cooked (and not overcooked). Turn the oven to broil for a couple of minutes at the very end if you want to brown the cheese on top. Find the recipe at Will Cook for Friends.
