7 Birthday Party Activities and Games for Toddlers

Fun birthday party diversions to keep the little ones entertained

It’s no surprise that a perfectly planned birthday party for a toddler isn’t likely to go accordingly. A few short games with simple rules may be all they can handle with visions of cake and presents taking up most of their thoughts. Fun, classic games are sure to be a hit, but have some activity stations and toys set out as well to occupy their wandering minds. Kids love prizes, so tiny trinkets and sweets can be rewarded to game winners or participants of each activity. Just make sure you have enough for each party guest so that no one feels left out! Here’s our round up of birthday party games and activities that are sure to keep toddlers entertained.

Art Stations – Set up a table with crayons, stickers, colouring sheets and paper, and let the little ones get creative! Or have them decorate party hats, crowns or animal masks for them to wear afterwards.

Costume box – Kids love to pretend, and what better way to let their imaginations run wild than with a box filled with costumes and props that fit the theme of the party? Be sure to get your camera out because this makes for a great photo op!

Dancing – Toddlers have an abundance of energy, and freestyle dancing is a great way for them to let loose. Prizes can be awarded for the best or silliest dance moves. Kids also love music-based games such as Musical Statues (when the music stops they have to freeze in the dance position they are in) and, of course, Musical Chairs.

Treasure Hunt – A treasure hunt using photo clues distributed around the house or backyard is a fun way to keep the little ones occupied for a while. The end point can reveal a prize for the first one there or goodies for all the kids. Similarly, outdoor parties can make use of a sandbox or a kiddie pool filled with sand so that the kids can take turns digging for treasures such as seashells and small prizes.

Pass the Parcel – In this game, a small gift is wrapped in multiple layers. Kids sit in a circle and pass the parcel around as music plays. When it stops, whoever is holding the parcel gets to unwrap a layer. The child who unwraps the last layer gets to keep the surprise inside.

Fishing Game – This cute idea uses a propped up cardboard display board decorated with an image of a pond and fish. Kids use a homemade or toy fishing rod and place it over the top of the box to “fish” for their prize. An adult sitting on the other side of the board attaches a small toy or treat to the end of the rod, and the child gets to check out what they caught!

Pin the Tail on the Donkey – This classic party game will have tots giggling at all the different places the donkey’s tail ends up. Simply blindfold each child and position them facing a large picture of a tail-free donkey (or any other favourite animal or character). Using a tail with double-sided tape, have them try to place the tail in its proper place. Closest attempt wins a prize!
